Sarah Spencer Washington – National Women’s History Month

.
Washington started her hair care business in 1913 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  She maintained a laboratory in Atlantic City, an office in New York City, beauty colleges in twelve states and had more than 30,000 agents selling her products door-to-door all over the United States and in several countries around the world.

She later formed Apex News & Hair Company. The publication kept “beauticians” and sales agents abreast of trends and what was happening within the company.  At the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, she was honored as one of the “Most Distinguished Businesswomen” in the country.  Sarah Spencer Washington was born in 1889 in Beckley, Virginia and died in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1953.
