On May 17th our youngest son, al-Malik Glorian Blake graduated from Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland.

It was a beautiful day, and the ride from Delaware to Maryland was made better as my sister, Veronica had flown in from Florida just the day before.

The day started out a bit overcast, but by the time Malik walked “stomped the yard” (2:18 on the video) the sun was high in the sky and it was hot and humid but we were cool as cucumbers!

Award-winning journalist Roland S. Martin was the Commencement speaker and stated about how generations of black people had to fight for the right for them to be there today – hashtag #itsyourtimenow

He had the graduates as well as the audience speak the phrase into existence, “this is your time now” as and he charged us all to continue to the fight for those coming up behind us.

These four words resignated with many and I hope that all 750 graduates left with a renewed sense of accountability along with their hard earned Degree!

Malik received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Administration and has since moved back home as he searches for employment.

Please pray that he finds something soon, as we all have student loan debt, unlike the students who recently graduated from Morehouse University.

Despite the high cost of their education, we couldn’t be more proud of both of our sons!
