How Are You Leaving a Legacy for Your Family?

Social Media for Boomers and Beyond – How are you leaving a legacy for your family?

Have you seriously considered writing a blog or perhaps a memoir?  Are you like me, a boomer or perhaps a little older, a senior and you’ve started thinking about how your kids and grand kids will remember you as the years go by?

If so, I know you have thought about how you need to leave a legacy for your family – you know that “dash in between” memory.  The longer I think about it, the more I think that I need to write an obituary, but that’s a topic for a different post, however, I did write about it recently for She’s-It.com a new website for women.

Oftentimes we think it just the millennials or Gen X,Y,Z and not you and me that understands the importance of social media and how we can use it to leave a legacy.  Hubby often defers to our son Malik or myself when placing an order online not because he has to, but because he wants to.  He likes saying, “I don’t do that computer stuff” and he’s only 62!

Recently, I had lunch with a friend who had just returned from San Diego after speaking at a convention about the importance of Memoir Writing.  She had been teaching the importance of  leaving a legacy with writing for years and enjoys teaching others how to do so.

As we drove slowly through the parking lot looking for a place to park we passed an elderly couple also walking slowly.   It was a bright yet brisk Autumn day and so I slowed down to follow them as they passed hoping to get a spot closer to the restaurant.

They stopped a few times, I assumed to retrieve the car keys so I pulled up beside them, lowered the passenger’s side window and said, “good afternoon, don’t mind us, I am just stalking you for your parking space”.  They both looked at me and smiled and said, “oh we are parked way over there” pointing to my left several rows over.

“Oh, okay thank you, I replied”.  The husband then said, “what is a Blogger?” as he had read my car’s Vanity Tag and both Myrle and I perked up in anticipation that they would be interested in attending one of our workshops.

However, as I explained to them about blogging and handed him my business card, they both said, “on no, we don’t do that computer stuff, we just learned how to work a PDF” – puzzled as I am not sure how you “work a PDF”, anywho, he thanked me and handed back the business card and they continued along.

The funniest thing about this encounter was, the couple who appeared to be in their late 70’s was younger than my lunch companion, Myrle -aka- WriterBowe who is 83 years young!

Myrle was an attendee at my Basic Blogging Classes in 2013 and since then she has conducted several Memoir Writing Workshops at various locations throughout Wilmington, DE and like I stated, had previously returned from a conference in California.

The point here is that you are never too old nor too young to do what you are passionate about and for me it’s teaching others how to navigate the various social media platforms and teaching other how to leave a legacy with a blog and for Myrle, it’s teaching Memoir Writing to also leave a legacy for your family.

  1. I’m a late bloomer when it comes to blogging and writing. I started to write my story in my late 60’s when I realized my children and grandchildren weren’t hearing it in my voice. At the same time I set up my blog and I love this whole experience. Like Myrle, I see myself keeping up with technology to the point that I can continue these passions as long as I’m able. Thanks for the inspiring post!

    1. “Bloom from where you are planted” so as long as you got started it is never too late! Writing, blogging or journaling is the greatest gift we can leave our children and grandchildren. I look forward to reading your blog.
