Now Go Outside & Play!

How many of you remember your mom or grandma telling you to go outside and play after you had completed your Saturday chores?

Last Sunday morning before heading to church, I heard the sounds of children’s laughter and looked out the window to see the neighbor’s kids jumping on their trampoline.

Although it was a chilly 52 degrees and windy, I could only imagine hearing their mother’s voice yelling after breakfast, “now go outside and play!”  Mind you, on Sunday mornings my grandmother had us in church from sun up to sun down, but that’s a different blog post for another day.

Most of the kids today are inside with an electronic device or watching television and unfortunately, the obesity rates are rising as we discussed in my Podcast interview with Queon Jackson, owner of Summer J Artesian Pops.

Did you have to go outside and play, and if so, what were your favorite games:

  1. When I was a kid, our parents didn’t have to tell us to go out and play; we were all over that all by ourselves! My favorite games were tetherball, 1-2-3-Redlight, hide & seek, and foot races in the middle of the street.

  2. They definitely don’t spend as much time outside due to technology but also because of all the hovering that goes on by anxious parents. When we were little, we roamed all over the place without adult supervision.

But your post brings back memories of so many games that we’d play until the streetlights came on. Double dutch, skipping, hide and go seek (a favourite), baseball, catch. Plus this post reminds me of a game we played by stringing elastics together. I think we changed the height of the elastic rope and had to get over it without touching. I cannot remember. But would love a nudge to my memory bank if anyone does.

    1. Yes, it is definitely a different world because we too left home early in the mornings and came back late in the evenings – no cell phones or GPS for our parents to track us. I hope someone remembers the game with the elastic, I can only remember “Chinese Jumprope”.

  3. This takes me on a stroll down memory lane. We played hop scotch, baseball, jump rope, hide and seek, marbles, jacks, Simon says, Frisbee, and my favorite flying kites! Now kids hardly go outside to play anymore, they are glued to the tabs and digital gadgets! 🙁

    1. Yes, I loved seeing kids riding bikes in the streets but it’s always sad to look out the window on Christmas morning and not see one kid in the streets running, jumping and playing with their new toys.

  4. Oh, my. Red light green light. Hide and go seek. Hopscotch. Potsy (a NYC variation of hopscotch). Jump rope. Hours on the playground monkey bars. Rhyming games while bouncing a Spauldeen.
