The Empowerment of Women Veterans

Episode #104 of “Out & About with Antionette” is my interview with Veronica Palomino.

Veronica is a native of Somerset, New Jersey, who now resides in Smyrna, Delaware and previously served in the United States Air Force in active duty from 1982 to 1987 as a non-commissioned officer.

Because of Veronica’s overwhelming dedication to her Veteran community, she was asked by the Department of Veteran Affairs, Women’s History, to serve on the Women Veterans: Her Story is our History posters which are featured in every VA Hospital across the nation representing the state of New York.

Veronica currently works at Zip Code Wilmington as the Alumni Volunteer Liaison. She continues to spread the word to transitioning Military and Veterans about community support, namely the VA’s Veterans Technology Education (VET TEC) scholarship and housing assistance program which supports veterans attending the nonprofit company’s 12-week courses in Software Development or Data Engineering & Analytics.

This year’s Women’s History Month was made even more special because not only do women make up 22%  of the combat forces more women veterans are transitioning out of the military at higher rates than ever before in the history of the military.

As a matter of fact, we now have the first African-American Base Commander of the Navy which is incredible to see how many military women are actually in charge of everything that moves across the air, land and sea here in the United States.

Zip Code Wilmington also includes many veterans and their current cohort contains 31% women, 33% of their graduates are underrepresented minorities; 32% with only a High School Diploma or GED; 6%. have an Associate Degree; 49% have a Bachelor’s Degree and about 6% have a Master’s Degree and 1%, has their Doctorate.

Dover Air Force Base, is a Military Airlift Command base, so most of our military men and women are already trained in technology.  However, when they leave the Air Force and go into the public sector, they may need cross training based on what is required by these companies.

What ZIP Code Wilmington has also done differently than any other Boot Camps, is that they offer need-based scholarships and stipends for students and Delawareans who are below the poverty line.

Zip Code Wilmington also received a 4.5 million dollar grant from the state of Delaware for stipends and scholarships for the next three years to serve our veteran population which is definitely a game-changer for many to compete nationally, globally and internationally.

Zip Code Wilmington is a VA Approved program included in the list of benefits.

Zip Code Wilmington operates a 24/7 facility at The Mill in downtown Wilmington, Delaware, located at 1007 N. Orange St.  The aim is to create a safe, fun, and collaborative learning environment, one with many quiet places to work on your craft individually or to meet as a group for projects.
