The Meaning of Memorial Day

If today you are honoring brave, military men and women who have died while serving our country, then you know the meaning of Memorial Day and are not simply posting “Happy Memorial Day” on Facebook.

However, if not, and you think that it’s solely a holiday for Bar-B-Ques, grilling and chilling, then I want to share this website that will give you more information about the meaning of Memorial Day and why we should honor and remember our heroes.

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2021 is today, May 31.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.

Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of the wounds sustained in battle. In other words, the purpose of Memorial Day is to memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
