Tips for Making a Business Blog a Success

  1. Post Consistently

There are no defined rules when it comes to posting frequency. Whether you post once a week or every day, the most important factor is that you blog on a consistent schedule. In order to establish a following, readers need to know when to expect new content.

2. Provide Useful, and Valuable Information

The more useful the information you post, the more readers you will attract and the more likely they will become regular readers. If you are promoting a particular business strategy, provide an example of how and why it was successful.

3. Ask for and Respond to Comments

CTA – invite your readers to share their opinions in your comments on every post. And when they do have something to say, acknowledge their comments, even when their viewpoint differs from your own – good, bad and ugly.

4. Be Focused, but Mix it Up

It’s good to have a clear focus when it comes to your blogging topics, but too much of anything can be a turnoff. Be willing to introduce new topics or a new way to look at a common topic to add interest and increase engagement.

Switch it up during the holidays or for special occasions or interesting events occurring locally or worldwide.  Try mixing in a few shorter posts or adding an occasional video to add a new level of interest.

5. Make It Easy to Subscribe

Make sure to include an easy way to subscribe by placing the option in an easy-to-find place on your blog and offer several ways including within the body of the content. Add the RSS feed and subscribe links in an email or subscribe buttons in a newsletter all of which are popular choices.

6. Promote, Promote and Share

Don’t expect your followers to read  every single post you write without constantly reminding them that you have a new blog post. Make sure to promote, promote and share links to your blog on social media, on your website, in your newsletters, and even in your email signature, and encourage people to click through.

7. Share Your Point of View

Sometimes, a little controversy can get more interest to your blog, but remember to have thick skin.  Don’t be afraid to share your point of view on a hot topic in your industry, and encourage that they leave a comment to share their point of view too.

8. Make It Easy to Read

Use subheadings, bullets, bold or colorful print to make it easier for your readers to skim and focus in on the information most important to them.  Make sure you have included the info promised in your title – no clickbait.

9. Self-Edit or Use a Proofreader

It can be difficult to catch errors as you write, so try writing your posts a day or two ahead and then coming back to read them again with fresh eyes. Read it aloud or ask a family member or colleague to proofread your posts to make sure they are error-free.  Edit after publishing is also a possibility.

10. Share a Little Bit of You

Your business blog may be about business, but that doesn’t mean you can mention a few tidbits about your personal life and experiences, especially if it relates to the topic. It gives readers a peek of your human side, remember that I covered that in Episode # 30 – Business Blogs: Personal Can Be Professional.

BONUS:

Blogging is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

This statement is not only included in my book, Basic Blogging Tips for Beginners, it is also something that I emphasize in all my training sessions.  It takes time for a business blog to build and grow, capture and keep readers, and create a loyal following and advocates.  So remember to be patient and try not to get discouraged if the progress seems slow, remember consistent content wins the race when it comes to blogging.
