Clean Beauty That Cares
In today’s world, a haircut is about so much more than a new look—it’s about self-esteem, well-being, and, increasingly, making choices that are kind to the planet. On a recent episode of the Out & About with Antionette Podcast, I sat down with Karen Sgroi, owner of LOKA Beauty Studio, to discuss how her salon is leading the way in clean, sustainable, and community-driven beauty in Wilmington, Delaware. From eco-friendly practices and healthy product choices to powerful partnerships that give back, Karen’s story is an inspiring example of how one business can make a big difference—both inside and out.
From Hairdresser to Founder: A Journey Fueled by Passion
Karen Sgroi’s journey in the beauty industry spans over 30 years—though she’s quick to keep the exact number close to the chest! After a brief stint in college, Karen found herself drawn to cosmetology, quickly discovering her knack and love for making people feel their best. Her career has taken her from assisting in salons, to working in top New York City establishments, to co-owning a salon for 17 years. But it was her desire to give back and focus on cleaner, greener practices that led to the founding of LOKA.
As Karen explains, LOKA stands for “Local, Outstanding, Knowledgeable Artists,” reflecting both their community roots and commitment to professional development and excellence. “I’ve been so lucky to be so successful, that it is really time to turn around and give back,” she shares.

Sustainability at the Core
What makes LOKA Beauty Studio different? Their dedication to clean beauty goes beyond surface-level marketing. Partnering with Green Circle Salons, LOKA recycles nearly all their waste—from hair clippings and foils to color byproducts—dramatically reducing their environmental footprint. Their product selection is another point of pride: all formulations are organic, ammonia-free, and formaldehyde-free, carefully sourced from reputable brands in Australia and Sweden.
Karen knows this level of diligence is crucial. “The more I delve into it, the more I am just outstanding. Like, wow, how could we be so ignorant for so long? And now the technology is so good…I like to partner with companies who are also sustainable and care about the environment as well.” Her commitment is personal and passionate: “It’s part of what my job is really to do…why not share the good things with all of our good people?”

Empowering Teams and Uplifting Clients
LOKA is more than a salon—it’s a thriving community hub. Karen’s emphasis on education is a cornerstone of her mission. She not only offers weekly classes for her staff but also mentors them one-on-one to ensure everyone is aligned on vision and values. This creates a strong, collaborative environment where everyone—from stylists to clients—feels welcome and supported.
As Karen describes, “Nobody’s better than anybody else here. We are all working together…with that environment, it is just so incredibly rewarding.” Her team’s enthusiasm is palpable: “Last weekend, it was Saturday afternoon, and…they just want to like be here and hang out, even when everything’s done. I mean, it’s a dream come true.”
Giving Back: Partnerships with Purpose
LOKA’s social impact extends far beyond the salon floor. The studio partners with organizations like Ronald McDonald House, Wigs for Kids, and the Friendship House, providing services and support to community members in need. From creating and styling wigs for children battling illness to helping women regain confidence as they re-enter the workforce, Karen and her team are dedicated to making a difference.
“It’s so rewarding to see the smile on their little face,” Karen says of her work with Wigs for Kids. “With the Ronald McDonald House, it’s about making these people feel great when they’re in such a tough time in their life…It’s an unbelievable partnership.”

The LOKA Experience: Warmth, Family, and Celebration
For anyone entering LOKA Beauty Studio, the experience is intentionally warm and uplifting. “As soon as you walk in the door, you are welcomed. You feel the lift and the happiness that we have here,” Karen notes. This high-vibe, luxury experience is not reserved just for clients—it’s a core part of the team culture, too.
The excitement is building for their grand opening at their new Avenue North location, held on September 6th. “It’s going to be the party you didn’t want to miss,” promised Karen. Those interested can follow updates on Instagram and Facebook at @LOKABeautyStudio.

Words of Wisdom
Karen’s closing advice for anyone listening: “Absolutely love what you do, no matter what it is…If you are not happy with what you’re doing, go ahead and change it. It’s better to change it than stay where you are.”
More Than Beauty
LOKA Beauty Studio is a shining example of what can happen when passion, sustainability, and community come together. As Karen Sgroi and her team continue to make waves in Wilmington, they remind us all that beauty is at its best when it serves both people and the planet.
