Natural Ways to Boost Your Mental Health

Today’s Guest Post was contributed by Maurine Anderson
.
First things first: any serious medical condition should, of course, be examined and addressed by a licensed healthcare professional. With that being said, however, it’s never a bad thing to also discuss with your doctor how you might be able to alter your lifestyle to boost your mental health.
.
Here are some proven (and sometimes unexpected) ways that you can actually improve your mental health for better all-around well being.
.
Spend time outdoors.
Studies have shown that spending time in nature can actually decrease brain activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex, which is the region of the brain that’s active when you’re engaging in negative thinking. It also has the power to improve self-esteem and relieve symptoms of a variety of mental health conditions.
.

.
Try aromatherapy.
Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways to boost mental health—in a warm bath, in an essential oil diffuser, or in a cup of hot tea, for example. And certain essential oils actually have positive mental health benefits tied to them. This article, for example, mentions that lavender can be used to encourage sleep and relaxation; lemon can relieve effects of depression and anxiety, and eucalyptus can offer clarity of the mind.
.
Get a massage.
Speaking of aromatherapy, aromatherapy can be used in conjunction with massage to boost mental health benefits even further. According to to this article, getting a massage relieves stress and stabilizes your overall mental state. In fact, it even triggers the release of “happiness” hormones like dopamine and endorphins, giving you an instant boost of gratification.
.

.
Meditate.
Meditating isn’t only for the spiritually centered—it is a practice that anyone looking to improve their mental health can incorporate in daily life. Meditation has the power to rewire thought patterns, decrease pain perception, and clear the mind from distraction—a common symptom amongst those with mental health conditions.
.

Get some exercise..
It may sound like common sense, but the benefits of exercise are simply too great to leave this one unsaid. Mental health may be only one aspect of your health, but it is truly related to every other aspect of your well-being—including your physical health. Research has found that those who get regular physical exercise are more resilient to the cognitive decline that comes with age.
.
Exercise can also reduce the symptoms of many mental health conditions and improve sleeping patterns. And for those who prefer having immediate gratification, physical exercise, like massage, triggers the release of “happiness” hormones, resulting in a lifted mood.
.

.
Have a cup of green tea or matcha.
Ever wonder why so many health-conscious individuals seem to drink green tea daily? Green tea has a variety of mental health benefits to offer—as does its powdered relative, matcha.
.
According to this article about the health benefits of green tea and matcha, drinking green tea or matcha can relieve stress, improve your memory, and minimize neurological health conditions—among many other physical health benefits which can only support stronger mental health.
.

Eat mental-health promoting foods.

Green tea isn’t the only thing that can boost your mental health. A variety of other foods has been linked to stronger mental health, including salmon, olive oil, avocados, nuts, and berries.

Practice self-care.

All of the tips in this article have something in common—they involve some form of self-care. Self-care is essential because if you are not in a proper mental state in the first place, you simply won’t be able to look outward and serve others. So in addition to the tips listed above, don’t underestimate the power of small forms of self-care, such as taking a nap, cleaning your living environment, or spending a few minutes in the morning on personal hygiene.

Do service for someone.

You’d think that the perfect picture of happiness was relaxing in a peaceful place, with plenty of money to buy you just about anything you could ever want. But studies have actually shown that people are happier in life when they center their focus around meaningful activities rather than hedonism. So if you’re looking for more happiness to boost your mental health, let happiness be a side effect of taking part in meaningful pursuits that will help others.

Let’s Chat: what are some of the things that you do to relax your mind and body?

Social Media and Women’s Health

Does it seem as though we are constantly anxious or are on a high anxiety alert? Whether it’s the negativity coming from the nightly news, people at work, the rising cost of food, nonsense in the newspapers, and social media mayhem, we are surrounded by non-stop endless negative energy.
.
This constant exposure to social media affects us all in one way or another. Concerns about the negative impacts of social media may have dominated public debate however, recent studies show that there are clear health benefits to being online and connected.

Tonight we discussed how connecting with other women online can enhance and improve our health both mentally and physically.

Lego Launched New Social Media Platform for the Little Ones

A few weeks ago, while driving home I listened to a news report about Lego launching a new social media website for kids under 13.  At first, I was a bit taken aback as I honestly don’t think that anyone under the age of 13 should have an account on social media and I even talked about it on my Podcast last Sunday.
.
The worse thing a parent should have to be concerned with when it comes to Legos are stepping on one barefoot.  The pain…ah man…hurts like heck and even though it has been many years since my sons were young and played with Legos, the pain of stepping on one has never left my memory.
.

I have since read more about this social media platform and decided to share it with you and ask for your opinion.
.
According to the CNN Website, “Lego’s new social network for kids lays the building blocks to prevent bullying.  The company launched on Tuesday a free iOS and Android app called Lego Life. The social platform children under the age of 13 share photos of their Lego creations, watch animated videos and participate in building challenges.
.

“One of its core purposes is to put their iPhone down and go do something else,”

I can understand and appreciate the concept of this being a part of an anti-bullying campaign, and I like the idea that parents must confirm their kids’ accounts via email as well as having a Lego Life moderator approve each post.  However, what I can’t understand is how does this mobile only app get kids to put down their iPhone and go do something else?

.

Lucy….you got some splaining to do!

.

I don’t know about you, but if my sons were young I would rather spend the day playing with Legos with them on the floor or at an actual FREE LEGO event like the one taking place on Saturday in Wilmington.

Blue Rocks Baseball 25th Season Begins But Who Was Judy Johnson?

I can still remember when the boys were young and how much excitement there was when the Blue Rocks released their season’s schedule.
.
Tickets were less than $5 a piece and the concession foods were always great and quite affordable.  I can’t believe my sons are now both in their 20’s and the Blue Rocks are celebrating their 25th season!
.

.
Last week, I stopped by the Chase Center on the Riverfront for an early morning meeting and as I sat in the car I looked over to the stadium and saw the statue of Judy Johnson.
It was still Black History Month, however, I hadn’t posted any Delaware Black History which I had done in previous years, so, I decided adding another day or two to an already short month wouldn’t hurt.
.
This was originally posted on DeDivahDeals.

William Julius (“Judy”) Johnson was born in 1899. He was an African American Negro League baseball player.
.
Born in Snow Hill, MD. Judy Johnson was the son of William Henry and Annie Lee Johnson. His father was a sailor, a licensed boxing coach, and the athletic director of the Negro Settlement House in Wilmington. William Johnson wanted Judy to be a boxer, and Judy learned to box from his older sister, Emma, but Johnson, who was 5′ 11″ (1.80 m) and 150 lb (68 kg), was far better suited for a career in baseball.
.

After working as a dock worker during World War I, Johnson began his baseball career in 1918, reaching the top-level Negro Leagues in 1921 with Hilldale, a team for which he played through 1929. In 1918, for five bucks a game, his semi-pro career began with the Bacharach Giants.

.

The following year he tried out for thePhiladelphia Hilldales, the premier team in the area. He failed to make the cut and joined the local Chester Stars to develop his skills. In 1921, he signed with the Madison Stars before finally making his professional debut with Hilldale of the Negro Leagues in 1922.

.

In 1930 Johnson was a player-coach for the Homestead Grays, and in that capacity, he discovered Josh Gibson. From 1935 through his last season in 1938, Johnson was the captain of the Pittsburgh Crawfords, one of the greatest franchises of all time. Although his playing days preceded the break of the color barrier by nine years, Johnson became the first Black assistant coach for a major league team in 1954.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975. Johnson Field at Wilmington’s Frawley Stadium is named for him. Johnson is known as Delaware’s folk hero of the diamond. Judy Johnson died on June 15, 1989, in Wilmington.

.

“Johnson was the best hitter among the four top third basemen in the Negro Leagues, but no-one would drive in as many clutch runs as he would. He was a solid ballplayer, real smart, but he was not the kind of fellow who could ‘just get it done.’ He was dependable, quiet, not flashy at all, but could handle anything that came up. No matter how much the pressure, no matter how important the play or the throw or the hit, Judy could do it when it counted. “  – Cool Papa Bell
