We are inviting you to be a part of creating healthier, happier, and safer communities for our kids this summer!

Wilmington Play Streets 2023: Creating Safe and Thriving Communities for All

Wilmington, DE – July 1, 2023 – Wilmington Play Streets, a community-development initiative, is thrilled to announce its upcoming events for the year 2023. Play Streets, brought to you by the Rysheema J. Dixon Foundation and the City of Wilmington Parks and Recreation, is a collaborative effort aimed at providing safe, fun, and healthy spaces for children, families, and neighbors to play and connect right outside of their homes. This year’s events are proudly sponsored by ChristianaCare, a leading healthcare provider dedicated to the well-being of our community.

The Rysheema J Dixon Foundation was established by her father in November 2022, after her sudden passing, to honor her legacy and continue her important work on behalf of her beloved Wilmington DE communities. The Playstreets program was her way of lifting up the children in those communities by providing numerous activities and a safe space in which to play, as children should, without fear. In addition to the children, the communities’ as a whole benefit from the  foundations’ partnerships with Christiana Care Hospital, Wilmington Parks and Recreation and the numerous vendors on hand at these events, which serves to support a spirit of unity.

Through the Play Streets program, streets are closed to traffic, and equipment for various activities and play is provided, offering a secure environment where children can flourish and communities can unite. The primary goal of Play Streets is to promote healthy lifestyles and overall well-being for children and families. By offering a safe space for physical activities and play, the program encourages the development of healthy habits from an early age.

In addition to fostering health and wellness, Play Streets seeks to enhance community cohesion. By bringing neighbors together in a shared space, Play Streets promotes a sense of belonging and connection, ultimately strengthening the fabric of our communities. The program also strives to improve relations with the police, fostering positive interactions and building trust within the community. Ultimately, Play Streets aims to make neighborhoods feel safer for residents, creating an environment where families can feel secure and at ease.

Aligned with the University of Delaware’s vision of “Healthy, Thriving Communities for All,” Play Streets combines research, education, and service capabilities to improve the health and well-being of Delaware communities and beyond. The program places a special focus on neighborhoods currently experiencing social inequities, where parks are less accessible. By providing these communities with safe and easily accessible spaces to play, Play Streets aims to bridge the gap and promote equity.

Parks and Recreation is excited to partner with Rasheema Dixon Foundation and Christina Care for another year of Play Streets. We looks forward to having fun bringing the various communities throughout the City as we have a safe summer.

  1. Hey there Mrs. Blake,

It’s been a while since your New York counterpart stopped by your blog to see what you’re posting. I’ve been extremely busy and losing weight now. 🙂

I am absolutely thrilled to learn about the Wilmington Play Streets 2023 initiative and the efforts being made to create safe and thriving communities for everyone. This is a wonderful step towards fostering a sense of togetherness and promoting a healthy environment for families and individuals alike.

Play Streets have proven to be highly successful in many cities, and it’s inspiring to see Wilmington join this movement. By temporarily closing streets to traffic and transforming them into vibrant spaces for recreational activities, communities can come alive with energy, laughter, and connection. It’s an excellent way to encourage physical activity, engage residents, and build stronger bonds among neighbors.

Creating safe spaces where people of all ages can come together to play, exercise, and socialize is crucial for fostering a sense of belonging and well-being. Play Streets promote a healthier lifestyle and combat the sedentary habits that often plague modern society. Additionally, they offer a unique opportunity for children to engage in unstructured play, which is essential for their development and overall happiness.

Moreover, Play Streets have the power to revitalize neighborhoods and bring people closer. By bringing activities, entertainment, and local vendors to the streets, these events not only promote physical health but also support local businesses and build a stronger sense of community pride. It’s heartening to see the positive impact this initiative can have on the local economy and social fabric of Wilmington.

I would like to commend the organizers and all those involved in making the Wilmington Play Streets 2023 a reality. It takes a collaborative effort to bring about such positive change, and their dedication is truly admirable. I encourage everyone to participate in these events, support local businesses, and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow community members.

The Wilmington Play Streets 2023 initiative is an exciting and important endeavor that holds great promise for creating safe and thriving communities. Let’s come together, embrace this initiative, and contribute to building a healthier, happier, and more vibrant Wilmington for all residents.

    Best regards,

    Drewry
