Hello and Happy July!

Can you believe that in a few short days we will be celebrating the 4th of July, and here in Delaware it’s hot hot hot!

Watermelon Slushie

I hope that you had an opportunity to try out the Watermelon Slush recipe which is featured on Friday’s post.

Some of you may know that I am a volunteer for AARP DE and as part of the Media Team, have covered many of their events including the 55+ Expo held at Dover Downs. If you missed the post click this link to read it, then make sure to share it with a friend.

AARPDE Communications Team

I was asked by Tasha Mackenzie, Interim ASD-Outreach coordinator to present a few Tech Tips at the recent volunteer meeting that was held last week in Wilmington

I chose to cover Facebook tips and entitled the presentation Social Silver Surfers.

The presentation not only covered Facebook as being one of the most popular networking platforms, but also how Facebook is being used to share interests and to stay in touch with family and friends.

I also talked about some of the other great features such as receiving discounts and deals from many stores and providers whose pages you “Like”. How to promote and share AARP events on Facebook but advised them against TMI which is posting Too Much Information online.

Antionette Blake presentation for AARPDE

Facebook is a great social networking platform in which to not only keep up with but to also share AARP news and events; meet new members; grow membership and connect with people that you may not have seen in years.

The Social Silver Surfers presention also included how Facebook could help you or your family members in choosing a Retirement Community.

When checking online many of these 55+ communities contain helpful reviews, images and videos of residence activities and you can read resident conversations that may assist you when making a decision.

I also shared 6 Tips for Staying Safe on Social Media which I found online to be helpful and they included items such:

  • Phishing scams
  • Celebrity Clickbait
  • Privacy
  • Facebook live

Don’t Overshare – TMI

We also had a lively discussion on how to combat loneliness when first retiring. Connecting with family and joining groups with members whom have similar interests, playing games, listening to music and sharing experience and talents.

Wishing you all safe and Happy 4th of July Holiday!

  1. I appreciate the suggestions for handling social media as we move in our silver years. Thank you!

  2. Great tips Del and good for you for volunteering. My Grandfather is in his final stages of life and I think FB has been a helpful tool for him to keep his mind on other things and interact with family and friends when he can.
stopping by The Midlife Blogging Community on FB <3

    1. Thank you Melanie. I also think that Artificial Intelligent devices i.e. Alexa and Google Home are great for those who are at the end of their lives or are on the onset of Alzheimer’s or early dementia.

They can provide news and music from their past that might keep their mind and brain a little bit more active.

Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful 4th of July holiday weekend ??

  3. What a great post, I need to also share this with my mom. I love how positive social media can be and the good it can do!
