Dancing, Diabetes, and Dedication: Dr. T’s Prescription for Community Wellness

On this episode of “Out & About with Antionette“, I sat down for a warm and energetic chat with Dr. T’aquina M. Warren, affectionately known as Dr. T.  Dr. T’s story is inspiring on so many levels. She’s a Smyrna, Delaware native, proud owner of Focus Pharmacy, and a passionate advocate for diabetes education. But this episode isn’t just a business success story—it’s about vision, faith, facing fear, and, above all, leading with kindness and community spirit.

Starting with a Why

Dr. T’s journey to pharmacy ownership wasn’t a straight line. She originally planned to be an OB-GYN, but a chance conversation with her chemistry teacher (and a little divine intervention via her second-grade teacher’s connections) steered her toward pharmacy. Fast forward: Dr. T returned to Delaware, worked in several big-name pharmacies, and eventually realized her true passion was community-focused diabetes care—a passion that led her away from cushy jobs and into the uncertainty of entrepreneurship.

Getting Real About Starting Something New

One of the great bits in this episode is Dr. T talking about her fear and uncertainty when stepping out on her own. She attended a pharmacy ownership workshop “just to learn”—and suddenly the big dream looked possible. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The process took years, from getting funding to opening doors, and even then, the pandemic hit just eight months after she opened. Dr. T is refreshingly honest about the challenges: depleted savings, low foot traffic, and the emotional toll on her family.

Creating Community through Conversation (and Line Dancing!)

Clients don’t just drop in for prescriptions—they stick around for hugs, support, gospel music, and even line dancing classes that Dr. T teaches to keep her community moving and healthy.

Words to Live By

At the end, Dr. T sums up her philosophy: “Always be kind.” Such a simple, powerful message.
