Pen Pals to Private Messaging

 

When I attended William B. Ward Elementary School in New Rochelle, NY in the 60’s, I remember we had a teacher that gave us an unusual class assignment.  We had to chose a Pen Pal from another country and write to him or her once a month. I am not sure how we chose the country or the person, but I do remember being excited because I loved to write.

My Pen Pal, was a young girl in Japan, I forget her name, but I will never forget how anxious I was to get her letters because they always included an origami creation.  Something that she made just for me, it could be a flower, or a bird or some other exotic design and I kept them all in a shoe box under my bed.

 

 

Unfortunately, other than making paper airplanes or a “Fortune Teller Game” I was never able to create anything as fancy as she, however, I enjoyed writing multiple page letters which makes perfect sense now as to why I am a blogger – I LOVED TO WRITE!

Having a Pen Pal in the 60’s has now evolved into a new meaning in 2018, most teens are connecting via Private Messaging, sending a text or Snapchat.  However, writing and communicating with someone one-on-one can still be fun and even lead to something greater, like writing a book or an eBook like my friend Lisa Bryant did.

Writing, journaling or blogging is not only good for the mind, it is also good for the body and soul.  We live in a world that is in constant change, with thoughts, ideas, news, and nonsense filling our heads on a daily basis.  We all need a way in which to release some of the pressures that may be building in our brains and writing is one of the best ways to do so. 

Not having time, shouldn’t be an excuse and you may be amazed at all that you have in your head, so take some time to make the time to write.  Although you may not write longhand with paper and a pen, start typing your thoughts on a keyboard or dictating them onto your Smartphone and you may find the more you write the better you feel.

This evening’s Podcast interview was with author and friend, Lorena Wooten who really opened up about her early life growing up, dealing with mental illness, depression, including Postpartum Depression.

Although the Podcast topic was entitled Social Media and Depression, we all know that depression didn’t start with social media and mental illness has been around since Biblical days.  Even though the Bible doesn’t use the word “depression” it’s often referenced by other similar words, such as “downcast,” “brokenhearted,” “troubled,” “miserable,” “despairing,” and “mourning,” among others.

 

Throughout the Bible, there are a number of stories about godly, influential men and women of faith, who struggled and battled through dark times of hopelessness and depression.   Fast forward to today, where many of us may find ourselves struggling and battling severe depression and are self-medicating.  

With a non-stop 24/7 365 news cycle on TV, mass shootings, radio, and social media it can become overwhelming, but we don’t have to stay stuck there. There’s hope and things we can do non-medicinally to help one of which is writing/journaling or blogging.

Members across all generations have at one time in their lives felt the pressure to fit in with the crowd. Teenagers have felt a need to fit in with their peer groups long before social media was even a thought bubble, but technology magnifies the problem in a powerful way.

However, in the African American community more specifically the talk of mental illness and suicide seems to be taboo, but this evening Lorena and I talked about why it vital to open up, talk and even get help with depression and mental illness.

Documenting Her Dementia in a Blog

Monday morning while getting dressed for work I was watching the Today Show and a feature story by Maria Shriver caught my attention.  It was an interview with a woman named Gerda Saunders and her family.

Mrs. Saunders is a loving wife, mother, grandmother and the author of the newly released book, Memory’s Last Breath: Field Notes on My Dementia in which she chronicled adventures in her life after a diagnosis of dementia at the age of 61.

 

 

According to the website:

Based on the “field notes” she keeps in her journal, Memory’s Last Breath is Saunders’ astonishing window into a life distorted by dementia. She writes about shopping trips cut short by unintentional shoplifting, car journeys derailed when she loses her bearings and the embarrassment of forgetting what she has just said to a room of colleagues. Coping with the complications of losing short-term memory, Saunders nonetheless embarks on a personal investigation of the brain and its mysteries, examining science and literature, and immersing herself in vivid memories of her childhood in South Africa.

 

 

 

What caught my attention wasn’t the fact that she has dementia, which is a disease that according to statistics one in nine Americans will be affected by.  What caught my attention was the fact that she chose to journal and blog about her life before she totally loses her memory.

 

That journal is now a book so once her memory fades and she is no longer mentally or physically with her family, they will always have a part of her, keeping her spirit alive for all eternity.

 

You can read more about the Today Show interview with Maria Shriver and learn more about the life and love of Gerda, however, I just wanted to say, that leaving a legacy with a blog is perhaps one of the most generous gifts she can give to her family.

 

Please don’t let a diagnosis of dementia, cancer or any other ailment or disease be the catalyst for starting a blog; let leaving memories of family fun, friends, inspiration, education, love, and joy be some of the motivating factors in which to do so.

 

No matter what you say about Social Media, good bad or ugly; Social Media has given us all an opportunity to document and chronicle parts of our lives that will last forever…a gift for our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
