A Brand Means More Than Your Favorite Brew
.
A few weeks ago, I had an opportunity to meet with Webmaster Ray at his infamous “Beer Room”. I was there to discuss creating an app for the AAU Teen Talk Radio team, however, shortly after arriving, I couldn’t help but talk about the many “Bottles of Beer On The Wall!”
.
.
Webmaster Ray and I are both members of the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce as well as the Fortune Group, so we see each other regularly at the bi-monthly meetings.
During one of those meetings, he mentioned something about his infamous “Beer Room”, however, hearing about it was one thing…actually seeing it was another!
.
.
Written up in the Livingwell Magazine, Ray briefly explained how his collection started and some interesting history behind a few of the bottles including one from Kenya, China and Germany.
.
Webmaster Ray grew up in Queens, New York and graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, then learned leadership skills as a Naval Officer for a few years. Living for 12 years in the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to Delaware, he held sales, retail management, and operations supervisory roles.
.
With the boom of the internet in the ’90s, ISPs competed with each other for business by offering extras such as “your own website”. Using his beer bottle collection as the topic for his own site, he enjoyed it as a creative outlet and quickly became intrigued by the power of the internet.
.
.
The vast majority of his Web Design, SEO, Internet Marketing, HTML code, video, social media, and mobile app skills were self-taught. With over 11 years in business full time, he still enjoys going to his office every morning (all the way across the hall from his bedroom).
.
Not only does a home office help him with low overhead, it makes working with clients more personal when they come to the “Beer Room” to discuss their goals. He tells them how collecting beer bottles actually helped lead to his business.
.
Webmaster Ray treats his clients’ projects as if they were his own, and also donates his skills toward community and charity groups. He has created websites for Pike Creek Valley Running Club, Knights of Columbus Council, USMMA College and the Little Sisters of the Poor, where for 6 years he coordinated the Nun Run 5K, which raised over $100,000 for the needy.
.
Although Webmaster Ray and I didn’t have an opportunity to talk in depth about creating an app for AAU Teen Talk Radio during this meeting, I will definitely be back at a later date. As a small business owner, branding is very important and having “an app for that” can put you out and in front of your competition, so we will definitely meet again to get the ball rolling.
