On Sunday’s Podcast, I had an opportunity to interview Ada Cunningham, owner of Jay’s House, Inc., which provides support to children with autism and their families.
We’ve all heard the term “autism” and most of us knows someone who has a child who was diagnosed with autism, but what is it? Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.*
We now know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, and each person with autism can have unique strengths and challenges.
A combination of genetic and environmental factors influence the development of autism, and autism often is accompanied by medical issues such as:
- Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders
- Seizures
- Sleep disturbances
Autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children. Many people with autism also have sensory issues. These can include aversions to certain sights, sounds and other sensations.
Ada Monet Cunningham is a mom of a son with Autism and an advocate for autism. Jay’s House provides support to children with autism and their families. Ada is currently hosting several fundraisers in order to keep Jay’s House open for children with autism and their families and I am excited to help her spread the word here on the blog in hopes that you will spread the word to your family, friends and followers.
The next fundraiser is on Saturday, October 13th at Alex and Ani’s in the Christiana Mall and a portion of the proceeds from purchases made between 3:00 and 5:00 pm will be donated to Jay’s House.
