Last week I had an opportunity to present “Developing Your LinkedIn Profile” as a part of the 2018 DEEP Day held in the Bank of America Building on the campus of Delaware State University. The invitation was made by Andrea Watkins-Cropper, DEEP Day Co-chair to whom I will be forever grateful.
The purpose of DEEP Day, which is the acronym for “Delaware Executive Exchange Program” is to develop student’s soft skills to help them become qualified business professionals. The College of Business makes it a top priority to ensure that students get a quality education and are empowered with academic and professional competencies to succeed in today’s global workplace.
Some of you may know that I was previously an educator in the Caesar Rodney School District after receiving my BS Degree in Elementary Education from Delaware State College back in 1983, so being “back on the yard” was definitely thrilling and a step up to say the least.
Normally I get nervous before speaking, however, on this warm and sunny afternoon at Del State I was pleasantly calm. I arrived on campus at little after 12 noon, just in time for lunch, however, I never eat nor drink prior to a presentation “just in case”. Anywho, I arrived earlier than my 1:30 scheduled time so that I could get a feel for the room and review my notes.
My presentation was held on the 3rd floor and most of the students starting trickling in about 1:20 pm and by 1:30 pm the room was filled with all the seats being taken, one or two of the students that arrived late left because there was no place to sit.
One of the best things about being an educator is the opportunity to share your knowledge with others and the most rewarding aspect of it is having others be receptive and engaging as you share this knowledge. It’s like receiving a payment which is far better than money and trust me when I say, “when I finished my presentation, I felt like someone had just given me a million bucks!”
There are so many educators out there who are also sharing their knowledge, giving back to the generations coming behind us. Ronnie Brown Mansfield is an Ohio native who enjoys being around people and helping children reach their highest possible potential. Having led schools as an educator, coach and in other leadership roles, he is equity driven, performance focused and vision oriented.
Ronnie’s education background ranges from working with high school, middle school and elementary school students, teachers and other personnel and his monumental role in President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper program in the school district and executing administrative strategies has boosted his career in learning and education.
Ronnie and I both know the importance of giving back as well as the importance of educating our youth, especially in today’s environment. As I looked out and into the faces of those students at Delaware State University I saw nothing but greatness and I made sure to tell them so, because if we don’t there may be no one who will!
