My first blog, DE Divah Deals.com was created in 2012, as a way to fill a void and it was just a hobby; I wasn’t serious so I started with a FREE hosting platform on Blogger.com which is owned by Google; I then moved it over to WordPress.com also a free platform.

Now if you know me and have heard me speak at various events then you know my favorite F word is FREE but with free comes limitations and that is what you will have with WordPress.com.

Initially, you may not be thinking about monetizing your blog but I think that you should invest in yourself right away because for less than $5 per month you can host your blog with a hosting company such as GoDaddy.com using the WordPress.org platform and there are many reasons why I suggest starting with WordPress.org and I’m going to list them for you today:

The hosting company i.e GoDaddy or BlueHost manages the servers are all the computers that store your blog files, pictures and posts. It keeps you connected to the Internet with security settings and updates.  I have been with GoDaddy for years.

Free Domain & 50% off Shared Hosting

FREE vs Paid Hosting on WordPress

WordPress.com is free but with limitations; WordPress.org costs but it’s an investment starting as low as $40 a year and you can always start with the Basic Plan and increase it as you grow into a bigger blogging business.

WordPress.com you have to have the extension wordpress.com after your blog’s name, for example www.myblog.wordpress.com versus www.myblog.com

WordPress.com has limited customization where WordPress.org has full control with lots of customization plugins and apps that you can include larger images, videos and files.

Also on WordPress.com they place ads on your site which does not make you any money and it may not even be from a brand that you want and you should be able to control your own advertisement which is what you have when using the paid self hosting platform WordPress.org.

Compared to direct sales or even other work from home positions blogging is very inexpensive to start and for about $5 a month you can set up a professional self-hosted blog that can turn your passion into a profit.  GoDaddy comes with a FREE Domain Name and the basic plan is $2.95/month with a Free SSL Certificate which gives you the https which is the secure protocol keeping your site secure.  Always check for promo codes as well.

Signing up for a self-hosted blog with WordPress.org and a reliable Host like GoDaddy you will have complete control over your content and will be able to grow your blog into a successful business.

  1. Free hosting is good when a person wants to gain valuable blogging experience. But they also need to know that after they publish on Blogspot, the content is quietly and possibly owned by Google. Back up content using Dropbox or backup in a Micro not so soft Word document. Paid web hosting is the solution to having 100% administrative control over everything.
