From DCIS to Discovery: My Breast Cancer Journey and the Power of Early Detection

Hello DelBlogger readers,

Today, I want to share a very personal journey that has recently become a significant part of my life, a journey through a Stage 0 Breast Cancer diagnosis known as DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In Situ). This isn’t just my story; it’s a testament to the power of early detection and a heartfelt reminder to prioritize your annual mammograms, no matter your age.

It all began with a routine mammogram in August. Like many of us, I’ve had them for years, often thinking of them as just another check-up. But this time, something was different. The mammogram revealed calcifications, leading to a biopsy. While the word “cancer” immediately brings fear, my diagnosis was Stage 0, meaning the abnormal cells were contained and had not spread. This early catch was, in my opinion, a game-changer.

In September, I underwent a lumpectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the cancerous tissue. Following that, I completed four weeks of radiation treatment at the incredible Helen Graham Cancer Center. From my oncologist to my radiologist and every single member of the team, their support, care, and kindness were simply outstanding. They guided me through every step, answering questions, offering comfort, and instilling a sense of optimism that made all the difference.

As we step into the new year, my journey continues with the start of anti-estrogen medication on January 1st. This is another proactive step in my long-term health plan, and I approach it with the same spirit of hope and determination.

Why am I sharing this?

Because my story underscores one critical message: early detection is paramount. My diagnosis of DCIS was found during a normal mammogram. Had I delayed, had I skipped that appointment, my outcome could have been vastly different. This experience has solidified my belief that annual mammograms are not just recommendations; they are vital appointments that can save lives.

For my fellow “Boomers and Beyond,” and for all women, please, do not put off your mammograms. Do not think you are “too old” or “too busy.” These screenings are quick, relatively painless, and offer invaluable peace of mind – or, in my case, critical early warning.

This is my personal experience and my opinion only. Every woman’s health journey is unique, and it is crucial to discuss your individual health needs and screening schedule with your own doctor. They can provide the true medical advice tailored to your situation.

I’m looking forward to diving deeper into this topic in the coming year, perhaps even making it a series to share more insights, resources, and encouragement. Together, let’s advocate for our health and for each other.

With hope, love and gratitude as we enter a new year of 2026!
