Hello, hello my fellow Delawareans! Antionette, the Delaware Blogger, here.
Well, the turkey has been eaten. The last slice of pie is gone. And now, the holiday shopping season kicks off with a… LOUD, CHAOTIC, 4 A.M. BANG.
Yeah… that’s a hard pass for me.
The idea of fighting for a parking spot at the mall or standing in a “doorbuster” line in the dark? That’s not my kind of holiday spirit. For our “boomers and beyond” generation, I think we’re looking for something different. We want story, not just stuff. We want connection, not chaos.
That’s why Shop Small Saturday (coming up November 29th!) is our day.
It’s not just about shopping; it’s about making a day of it. It’s a low-stress, high-joy activity where we get to stroll, discover unique gifts, and support the local businesses that make Delaware so special.
So, let’s trade the mall parking lot for the charm of Main Street. Here are a few of my favorite Delaware downtowns for a perfect “Shop Small Saturday” adventure.

1. Historic New Castle: For Cobblestone Charm If you want to feel like you’ve stepped into a holiday movie, this is the place. Strolling the cobblestone streets of Old New Castle is pure magic. The shops are unique, and the history is all around you. You can find everything from art to antiques. It’s the perfect place to find a truly one-of-a-kind gift. Pop into a legacy spot like Bridgewater Jewelers on Delaware Street. They’ve been a trusted part of that community for years, and they understand that jewelry is all about the stories behind the pieces.
2. Downtown Dover: For Capital City Finds Right in our state’s capital, Loockerman Street and the surrounding area are full of hidden gems. What I love about shopping in Downtown Dover is the sense of community. And they have a fantastic program to reward you for shopping local: the Capital Key! It’s a loyalty program from the Downtown Dover Partnership that gets you access to special offers, savings, and deals from participating merchants. It’s their way of saying “thank you” for supporting downtown. How great is that?

3. Rehoboth Avenue: For a Salty Air Stroll The beach in the off-season is a local’s secret, isn’t it? Shop Small Saturday is the perfect time to explore Rehoboth Avenue. The crowds are gone, the parking is easier, and the shops are all decked out for the holidays. You can leisurely stroll the entire avenue, popping into all the unique boutiques, galleries, and specialty shops. You can find everything from home decor at Christmas Tree Hill to gourmet salt-water taffy. Grab a hot chocolate, breathe in that salty air, and find gifts you simply can’t get at a big-box store.

This Saturday, let’s make our holiday dollars do double-duty. Let’s find the perfect gifts for our loved ones and support the local families and entrepreneurs who make our First State so wonderful.
Let’s go put our money where our heart is: right here in Delaware.
