We are all looking to save money when shopping at the grocery stores, especially as the season changes and we tend to eat more during the cooler months. So in today’s post, Grocery Smarts for Savvy Seniors: Making Smart Choices at the Store I am giving you a few tips in order to do so.
The grocery store can be a maze of aisles, filled with endless choices. As a savvy senior, navigating this maze can sometimes feel overwhelming. But fear not! With some planning and knowledge, you can stock your kitchen with healthy, delicious options supporting your well-being.
Plan Your Meals
One of the best ways to avoid impulse purchases is to plan your meals in advance. Consider your favorite recipes, dietary needs, and any special occasions coming up. This will help you create a grocery list that focuses on the ingredients you need, rather than the items that catch your eye.
Shop the Perimeter
The outer aisles of the grocery store are typically where you’ll find the freshest and most nutritious foods. This is where you’ll find produce, meat, poultry, seafood, dairy products, and whole grains. These items are generally less processed and contain fewer additives than packaged foods.
Read Labels
As we discussed in a previous post, becoming a label-reading champ is essential for making smart choices. Pay attention to serving sizes, added sugars, sodium content, and unhealthy fats. Choose products that are high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Buy in Season
Seasonal produce is often fresher, more affordable, and packed with nutrients. Check your local farmers’ market or grocery store for seasonal recommendations. You might even discover new fruits and vegetables you’ve never tried before.
Frozen is Fantastic
Frozen fruits and vegetables are often just as nutritious as fresh, and they can be a great convenience. They’re flash-frozen at peak ripeness, preserving their vitamins and minerals. Look for frozen fruits without added sugars and frozen vegetables with no added sauces or seasonings.
Bulk It Up
Buying in bulk can be a cost-effective way to stock up on pantry staples like grains, nuts, and seeds. Just be sure to store them properly to maintain their freshness.
Sample Wisely
Many grocery stores offer free samples of new products. This is a great way to try before you buy and discover new favorites. Just be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overeating.
Avoid Impulse Buys
It’s easy to get distracted by colorful displays and enticing promotions. Stick to your grocery list and avoid impulse purchases that might not be the healthiest choices.
