Hello, friends! It’s Antionette Blake, your DE Divah, AKA the Delaware Blogger, and I’m so glad you’re here. Whether you’re tuning into the Boomers and Beyond Podcast or stopping by the DelBlogger blog, I want you to know—you belong to a community that values your experience, your wisdom, and your incredible presence.
This Month’s Topic: Purpose & Legacy
As the beautiful month of May wraps up, I’ve been thinking about something deeply important: purpose. In our latest podcast episode, I dove right in—how do we ensure the lives we’ve led mean something? How can we take the wisdom we’ve gathered and use it to positively impact others?
For those of us 55 and better, there’s a deep human need to know that our story matters, that our legacy will live on. And right now, we’re in the perfect season to give back, shape the future, and find renewed passion.
Why Volunteering & Mentoring Matter
Did you know that volunteering is not just a nice thing to do—it’s good for your health? Studies show that older adults who volunteer regularly live longer, happier lives. In fact, volunteers over 65 have up to a 44% lower chance of passing away in five years compared to those who don’t volunteer!
But it’s about so much more than longevity:
- Better mental health: Volunteers experience less depression and anxiety.
- Sharper minds: Staying active and connected helps cognitive function.
- Stronger social networks & self-worth: Giving back keeps you connected to your community and reminds you of how much you have to offer.

The Unseen Superpower: Mentoring
We often underestimate just how valuable our life experience is. Imagine what you could have accomplished if you had a wise mentor at 30—now, you can be that guiding light for someone else! Whether you choose to mentor through programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters, SCORE, or local initiatives, sharing your journey could help someone shape theirs.
Four Steps to Start Making a Difference
Ready to find your new purpose? Here’s how:
- Start with your passion—Love animals? Try a shelter. Love reading? Volunteer at a literacy program.
- Connect locally—Check nonprofits, faith-based groups, or Volunteer Delaware for opportunities.
- Go virtual—Mobility issues? No problem! There are meaningful ways to serve from home.
- Start small—You don’t have to commit to a ton of hours. Try volunteering just a couple of hours a month and see how it feels.

Homework for You—And an Invitation
Your story, your knowledge, your laughter… they’re not just for you. They’re a legacy waiting to be written in someone else’s life.
This week: Look up one volunteer or mentoring opportunity that sparks your interest. Read about it, see if it speaks to you, and if it does—reach out. Show up! Your community needs you.
Now, I’d love to hear from you. Go ahead and share in the comments below or reach out on social. Let us know which opportunity caught your eye or how you plan on giving back. Spread the word—share this post and the podcast with your fellow Boomers, friends, and family! We’re building something extraordinary together.
