Welcome back to another episode of Boomers and Beyond, the podcast where we explore the best ways to live our lives to the fullest in our prime years. If you haven’t tuned in to Episode 30, you’re in for a treat! This time, we took a journey into the transformative world of journaling and how it can brighten your mornings and overall day.
Why Journaling?
You might be thinking, “Isn’t journaling for teenagers?” I get it, I used to think the same. But trust me, this simple practice can bring a sense of calm, purpose, and joy to your day—no matter your age. I shared some of my personal stories and insights, even reminiscing about my childhood diary! (Remember that green journal from the third grade? Yes, I still have it and one day I’m going to dig it out to discover what was so important to me back in 1960-something.)
Getting Started with Gratitude
Start your day with a thankful heart. Instead of reaching for your phone, jot down a few things you’re grateful for. Did you wake up with good health? Is there sunshine in your window? Your first cup of coffee? Focusing on gratitude sets a positive tone for the entire day. My grandma always said, “I’m so happy when I can wake up in my right mind,” and now that I’m older, I finally get it.

Dreams and Intentions
Why not write down your dreams? If you wake up with a vivid memory of your dreams, jot them down. It’s fascinating to see what’s been going on in your subconscious. Also, setting intentions for the day can be incredibly effective. Instead of an overwhelming to-do list, focus on a few key intentions like cleaning the oven, doing some self-care, or simply having a peaceful day.
Affirmations and Self-Awareness
Start your morning with a positive affirmation. I encouraged my son to do this, and now I encourage you. Whether it’s an inspirational quote or a phrase that resonates with you, let it guide your day. Additionally, take a mindful moment to check in with yourself. Acknowledge how you’re feeling and accept it—whether you’re energized or tired, anxious or relaxed.
Making It Your Own
Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to journal. Whether you pick up a beautiful notebook or grab a simple one from Dollar Tree (they have some really cute ones!), make the practice your own. You might even want to doodle or use a fancy pen. It’s all about creating a cathartic space to clear your mind and reflect.

I have only just started journaling in the morning and I am loving it. I have a journal with some prompts in it already and it is great. Gratitude is always so powerful to track!
Wow, how awesome and congratulations! Yes, starting your day in gratitude and putting it into words can be such a beautiful way to start the day!
