Celebrating 30 Years of Positive Impact with Mark Sills
In a recent heartwarming episode of the Out & About with Antionette podcast, I had the honor of interviewing Mark Sills, a well-respected advocate, organizer, and business entrepreneur from Wilmington, Delaware. Mark, who has devoted his life to youth development through sports, especially basketball, shared his incredible journey and current projects with listeners.
Mark Sills, born and raised on the east side of Wilmington, Delaware, has established himself as a notable figure in the community. He’s the founder of Urban Youth, Inc., a company that has earned many accolades for its work with Wilmington’s youth. Through his programs, countless young people have found pathways to education and future success, including college scholarships. His illustrious career has made him a recipient of awards from prestigious entities such as the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus and Philadelphia City Hall.
Throughout the podcast, Mark detailed his journey from a participant in sports to an illustrious coach and mentor. It all began with coaching in the Stormin’s Classic Basketball League, where he discovered his passion for mentoring young talent. From there, his journey led him to Howard High School, Delaware’s first Black high school, where he served as a basketball coach for over a decade. Venturing into entrepreneurship, Mark founded Urban Youth Inc., launching basketball tournaments and leagues that extend across North America.
Mark’s passion for community service transcends simple mentorship; his organization, Urban Youth Inc., touches lives through sports tournaments held in several states and internationally. From Canada to Georgia, his influence stretches far and wide. Notably, Mark highlights his work in Wilmington, where he’s hosted leagues attracting future NBA and NFL players, showcasing the city’s budding talent.

A dedicated advocate, Mark Sills continues to prioritize giving back to his community. As President of the Delaware Afro American Sports Hall of Fame, he leads initiatives that honor coaches and athletes across Delaware. The organization doesn’t just celebrate achievements; it actively supports the next generation by awarding scholarships to college-bound student-athletes. The upcoming banquet scheduled for April 19, 2025, promises to be an event filled with excitement and recognition of distinguished honorees.
In addition to his work in sports, Mark collaborates on creating the Delaware State University Athletic Museum at Loockerman Hall, a project committed to preserving the institution’s athletic history. The museum will feature numerous artifacts, photos, and memorabilia vital to the heritage of Delaware State athletics. Mark urges everyone with pertinent materials to contribute to this initiative, further solidifying the legacy and impact of the university’s athletes and coaches.
This episode of Out & About with Antionette is not just a chronicle of Mark’s achievements but a masterclass in perseverance, community service, and the profound impact of mentoring the youth. Mark’s story is inspiring, showing that through dedication and passion, one can create significant changes and leave a lasting legacy.
