Technology & Travel: How Boomers Are Winning at Modern Adventures!

Hello, fabulous friends!

Whether you’re joining me while out on your morning walk, cozied up with your favorite coffee, or relaxing at home, I’m Antionette Blake—aka the DE Divah and proud creator behind the DelBlogger blog. Today, I am absolutely thrilled to dive into a conversation close to my heart and, if you’re a seasoned traveler or just a dreamer, I have a feeling it will inspire you too!

Growing Older Means Living Bolder – Especially When We Travel!

If you caught my latest episode of the Boomers and Beyond Podcast, you know my family and I are buzzing with excitement for our upcoming trip to Puerto Plata in the beautiful Dominican Republic. It’s been years since we visited, and as we prepare, it got me thinking about how travel—and the technology that helps us do it—has changed for the better, especially for us boomers.

Gone are the days of endless calls to travel agents (remember the ones in the mall?). Today, your smartphone or laptop can do it all—compare flights, book stays, translate languages, navigate new cities, and so much more. It might sound intimidating at first (“Apps?! Do I need a new phone?!”), but I promise, these tools are designed to make life easier and your travels smoother, more affordable, and a whole lot more fun!

Tech Tips to Make Travel a Breeze

Here are a few nuggets from the episode:

  • Flight & Hotel Apps: Google Flights, Expedia, Kayak, and others can help you find the best deals. Track prices, compare airlines, and see when it’s cheapest to fly—all at your fingertips. If you can, try traveling midweek or during “shoulder season” to save even more!
  • Vacation Rentals: Airbnb and VRBO are fantastic alternatives to hotels, especially for families. Always check ratings, read reviews, and don’t be shy about messaging your host with questions before booking!
  • Must-Have Travel Apps: Download your airline’s official app for easy check-in, mobile boarding passes, and real-time flight updates. These apps are your secret weapon against long airport lines and unexpected gate changes.
  • Stay Organized: Make digital copies of essentials (passport, travel insurance), and keep them stored safely online with Google Drive or Dropbox—just in case.
  • Peace of Mind: Consider a Bluetooth tracker for your luggage, like Apple AirTags or Tile, so you’ll always know where your bags are—even if the airline loses them.
  • Explore Confidently: Download offline maps (Google Maps or Apple Maps), and try a translation app like Google Translate if you’re heading somewhere new. You can even convert foreign currencies on the go so you’re never second-guessing your spending.
  • Ride Smarter: Uber and Lyft are often safer and easier than local taxis, giving you clear pricing and real-time tracking.

It’s Okay to Start Small—You’ve Got This!

Don’t let those “what ifs” hold you back. Try out a new app at home first—maybe use navigation to your favorite restaurant or the library. With every step, you’ll get more comfortable and confident with today’s travel tech.
