Cruises Can Rejuvenate Your Relationship

Spring is right around the corner and although we had a very mild winter I know most of you are pretty antsy and ready to get out of the house and go on vacation.
.
Whether is a family vacation or a couples-only getaway, a cruise can be a great way to spend time together, reconnecting and rejuvenating a relationship.

Two weeks ago, my special guests on the Podcast were Tee and Derek Alexander, Independent Owners of “JustGetaway2Day”, a franchise of Cruise Planners.  We talked about the importance of slowing down to reconnect with our spouses or significant others.

It is very important to our health and well-being to unplug and unwind, especially in light of what is going on all around us in the world.

.

Hubby and I have been together for over 28 years, 27 of them married and between the kids, which are now mini-men, the job, he is now retired, the house, the bills and all the other things that go along with life, sometimes spending time alone together without distractions is put on the back burner.

.

February is the shortest month of the year, with only 28 days, and for us, it started with the celebration of the birth of our youngest son who turned 21 on the 1st.  It also reminded me that life is short and precious and that we need to take full advantage of each and every day.

.

When you are working a 9-5 or perhaps an even longer day it can sometimes be hard to shut down and forget about the deadlines and the dreaded morning commute, but just as with anything else scheduled, we should schedule a time to shut down and reconnect with our spouses or significant others.  It could be something as simple as sitting on the sofa and talking about the weather…or sitting on the couch watching a movie…or in our case, snuggling and watching episodes of Perry Mason and the Twilight Zone before drifting off to sleep.

.

There are many ways in which to reconnect with our spouses and/or significant others and they don’t all have to entail spending wads of money or traveling to exotic places.  Below are a few inexpensive yet effective ways to reconnect and rekindle the romance.

  • Daily Touch: Don’t let the sunset on the day before you at least touch your spouse. Whether it’s a kiss, a high-five, holding hands, a hug, or a back scratch — humans need physical contact, it’s one of our most basic needs!
  • Create couples rituals. Do something regularly that bonds you, such as 10 minutes to chat before bed, having morning coffee together, or saving Saturday for date night.
  • Daily check-in. Schedule time to appreciate something about each other or offer up some new information from your day and listen.  Really listen which is my number one problem and hubby will quickly point it out.
  • Disconnect from the 24/7 office.  Whether you work outside the home or from a home office.  Push the “off” button! Turn off or turn down cell phones, tablets, and computers.

I no longer have the luxury of working from home, but in 2005, I do remember when the boys were young and I worked from home.  I would log on as soon as they left for school, log off once they got home but then log on again when they went to bed.  Had I known that in less than a year later, I would be laid off, I would have never done that and that was definitely time that cannot be recovered, instead, I should have used it to spend more time with my hubby.

  • Setting Social Media limits. Check email and social media platforms in the evening with a time limit, then turn off your cell phone, laptop or tablet and enjoy the unplugged time with each other.
  • Say “I love you.” EVERYDAY.  Hold hands, kiss, cuddle, pinch and squeeze because it does release endorphins that help you relax.

If you have the time as well as the finances, booking a getaway is also a great way to reconnect and rejuvenate the romance.  Online travel booking is a very popular method of scheduling corporate trips and personal vacations. There are literally thousands of easy-to-use websites and apps to choose from, which helps people become their own travel agent.

However, despite this, online booking may not always be the best choice when it comes to travel.  Think about it…travel management companies and agencies have the ability to offer clients incredible savings, upgrades, services, and resources that online booking cannot match. While there are benefits to both online booking and travel agencies, there are much more benefits that a travel management company can offer over online booking.

Two Trains Running, A Play by August Wilson

Two Trains Running, A Play by August Wilson

.

On Sunday, hubby and I had an opportunity to attend August Wilson’s 7th play, Two Trains Running at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington.  Most of you probably know that another one of August Wilson’s plays, Fences was recently a box office hit directed by as well as starred in by Denzel Washington.

.

Two Trains Running is a two-act drama that takes place during a week in 1969 at Memphis Lee’s restaurant in Pittsburgh which was also the childhood home of August Wilson and the setting of many of his other plays.

.

Two Trains Running Program

According to the website:

The seventh play is August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle, Two Trains Running takes place in a restaurant run by a man named Memphis Lee. It is the 1960s, and the neighborhood is about to go through major economic development and gentrification. While we see a lot of the same themes as in August’s earlier works (surrounding race, oppression, identity), we see how those themes are filtered through a more modern world that is in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. Malcolm X has just been killed, and the younger characters in the play, namely Sterling and Risa, are searching for who they are and where they fit in.

.

Memphis has given up on trying to save his business from being taken by the government but insists on getting the money he deserves. The colorful cast of African-American characters includes an old man who has gone crazy and can only say two phrases, a man who runs numbers (i.e. the lottery) for the people of the town, a young woman who cut up her legs to make them ugly so men would leave her alone, and a young man who recently got out of the penitentiary and just wants some money and a woman. A few of the characters from Wilson’s other plays are a part of this world, and hearing their names mentioned reconnects us to the roots of what it means and has meant to be an African-American in America.

.

The first act of the play seemed to progress slowly, however, the second act brought it all home and the actors received a standing ovation for their performances.

Hubby and I truly enjoyed the play and want to thank the Kappa Mainstream Leadership, Inc., and Delta Outreach and Education Center for bringing it to Wilmington.

Sweater Weather Before the Snow Storm

The day before what was supposed to be a major snow storm in the Northeast the temperatures rose to a balmy 70 degrees.  It was not exactly a call for shorts and tank tops, but more like sweaters and tights, either way, it was a great WIW Wednesday.

The Importance of a Professional Profile Picture

“Never judge a book by its cover”, well that may not hold water in today’s world. The reality is that we are all judged, or perceived, by the way, we look. In particular when it comes to professional situations, job interviews, making connections, and networking, we have a short amount of time to make a good first impression.

.

You are the brand and face of your business which is why having a professional headshot is so essential. Selfies taken with your Smartphone doesn’t cut it.  When was the last time you had a good look at your profile picture? Does it match the image you are trying to portray or are you still using an old outdated photo from a couple years ago to portray an unrealistic version of yourself?

.

You want to make your headshots the best possible and most affordable and my Podcast guest, Willy Vargas of Vargas Photography gave us some great tips.

The Power of Social Media

Last month, one day after the inauguration of Donald Trump, news stations all around the world were broadcasting women, men, and children, marching in solidarity against many of the policies being put in place by the Trump administration.  These marches were not only in the United States but all around the world in other countries and the amazing thing about this was, it all started with just one woman’s Facebook invite.

.

Women's March in DC

Disappointed by Trump’s victory, Teresa Shook, a retired lawyer who lives in Hawaii, dashed off a post asking if women were interested in rallying in Washington around Inauguration Day.

.

She asked her online friends for help in creating an event page, and posted one for her proposed march. When Shook went to bed that night, 40 people had signed on, but when she woke up the number of responses swelled to over 10,000.

.

What Teresa Shook started with a single Facebook invite to 40 of her friends snowballed into one of the biggest protests the US has ever seen.  When Teresa was interviewed by the LA Times she said: “I’m overwhelmed with joy. A negative has been turned into a positive.  All these people coming together to unite to try and make a difference. That’s what we’re going to be doing for the next four years. I see it’s really going to happen.”

.

.

Washington DC led the way with at least 500,000 people gathering for a rally outside the US Capitol building.  Organizers, including the Women’s Equality Party, said an estimated 100,000 descended on central London with similar events taking place in Manchester, Edinburgh, Belfast, Liverpool and Cardiff.

.

Many of the women in Washington wore pink knitted hats with cat ears – a reference to comments made by Mr. Trump in a 2005 leaked video in which he bragged about grabbing women “by the pussy”.

.

This was an international day of action in solidarity” on President Trump’s first full day in the Oval Office.

.

All with one little Facebook post!

.

The power of social media can be good bad and ugly.  As we know, the new president is a big user of Twitter which is the 140 character social media platform.  Twitter is actually considered a microblogging platform where you can quickly share information with a large number of people in real time.

.

So what do you do when you start a movement on social media?

.

The true power of social media is an influence. Social media provides an avenue for companies to not only engage with customers but also influence them with the right content that helps them make a decision.  It’s obvious that social media (i.e. talking to people) is a great tool for building relationships with fans and customers.

.

Whether you are a big company, a little company, or even an individual, social media platforms can be used to connect with your customers.  Social media gives you an efficient, cheap, and effective way to build that trust, provided, of course, that you’re trustworthy, to begin with.

.

Social media does not always have to be an online distraction or a procrastination platform. Even with many being addicted to their social media networks, it is one of the best ways to stay informed. News outlets, corporations, and everyday people use social media to deliver their messages to the masses.

.

So if you have a cause or a purpose the best way to get more involved is to post it on social media and Facebook Groups are in my opinion the best way in which to do so.
