Sparking Curiosity and Community: Leonard Young’s Culture Check App Dishes Up Black History for Every Generation
Welcome back to “Dishing with the DE Divah” where we celebrate real life, real reinvention, and real Delaware pride. Today, I sat down with Leonard Young, founder of the National Black Guide and Culture Check.
A Journey Rooted in Community
For over two decades, Leonard Young has been a trailblazer in digital media, connecting Black communities across Delaware and beyond. As the visionary behind the National Black Guide, he’s always been driven to shine a light on stories and achievements too often overlooked.
Now, with Culture Check, Leonard Young is taking that mission mobile, empowering players of all ages to look beyond familiar names and uncover the vibrancy, complexity, and ongoing evolution of Black culture.

Why a Trivia App? Why Now?
Culture Check isn’t your average trivia game. Leonard Young noticed a gap: “You can only quiz yourself on Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and Harriet Tubman so many times before it’s just not interesting anymore.” He wanted to reimagine what Black history trivia could be—covering sports, music, entertainment, and current achievements, not just the pages of the past.
And the best part? This is a game built for everybody—from “younger folks who come into the world with tablets” to those “older folks” now rocking smartphones and eager to keep their minds engaged.
Partnership and Representation Matter
Bringing on Saniya Gay, the inaugural National Miss Juneteenth and Delaware State graduate, as the Culture Check ambassador and trivia host was a thoughtful move. Her passion fits seamlessly into the mission: honoring the past while championing a vibrant present.
