Giving Back with Sisterhood: Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s Fall Into the Holidays Vendor Fair

How Middletown’s MOT Community is Empowering Students and Supporting Local Businesses, One Event at a Time

Spotlight on Service and Scholarship

In the heart of Delaware’s Middletown, Odessa, and Townsend (MOT) area, community service isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a way of life. The latest episode of “Out & About with Antionette” brings that spirit to the forefront, featuring Sorors Nikki Henry and Kathy Bin Yusif of the Mu Psi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. Together, with host Antionette they discuss the chapter’s signature event: the Fall into the Holidays Craft and Vendor Fair—a lively showcase of local talent and enterprise, with a powerful mission behind the scenes.

Vendor Call

The Vendor Fair: Where Community and Commerce Meet

If you’ve ever wondered how local events drive impact on multiple levels, look no further than the Fall into the Holidays Craft and Vendor Fair. This year marks the third annual event, set for November 8th at Silver Lake Elementary School’s cafeteria in Middletown, Delaware, from 12 to 3 pm.

As Nikki explains, the vendor fair isn’t simply a place to shop for early holiday gifts or enjoy delicious food and creative crafts. It’s a deliberate effort to boost local small businesses and create a vibrant hub for neighbors to connect and support one another. “We’ll have a variety of vendors—food, jewelry, accessories, beauty products, and handmade items,” Nikki notes.

Even more importantly, every dollar from vendor registration fees directly supports the Mu Psi Sigma Chapter’s Yellow Rose Scholarship, creating a full-circle community impact—vendors thrive, shoppers discover unique finds, and students receive the support they need to pursue higher education.

Investing in the Future: The Yellow Rose Scholarship

Education lies at the heart of Sigma Gamma Rho’s mission, and the Yellow Rose Scholarship is a testament to that commitment. As chair of the scholarship committee, Kathy passionately emphasizes the importance of filling financial gaps for students, especially in challenging times. “To whom much is given, much is required,” she reminds listeners—a sentiment that resonates deeply with the sorority’s ethos of service.

Each year, the Yellow Rose Scholarship is awarded to both a graduating high school senior and an undergraduate college student who reside in the MOT area. With over $4,000 already awarded since the program’s inception, the sorority is making tangible strides in empowering young scholars. “We want to be that loving sister to people we may not have even met yet, giving them the support to succeed,” Kathy says.

The application process includes a brief essay, transcripts, and proof of enrollment—requirements designed to ensure that the scholarship reaches those most dedicated to their academic journey.

Vendor Day 2023

Vendors and Volunteers: The Backbone of the Fair

Behind the scenes, the event’s organizers are eager to welcome both new and returning vendors who share in the vision of community uplift. With affordable registration (and even early-bird specials), there’s a clear invitation for small businesses and crafters to step forward and be a part of something bigger.

More than just setting up tables, the vendors become integral partners in the chapter’s scholarship mission. Many add their own special touch by providing items for attendee raffles, bringing a spirit of generosity and fun to the entire afternoon.

The Power of Giving Back: Sisterhood in Action

What makes the vendor fair stand out isn’t just the festive atmosphere or the worthy cause. It’s the genuine sense of community and sisterhood running through every aspect of the event. As Nikki puts it, “If you can give back, why not?” It’s a sentiment echoed by Kathy, who believes that service is a privilege—a blessing multiplied whenever it’s shared.

This event is more than fundraising; it’s about coming together, uplifting each other, and planting seeds for the future. As Kathy beautifully sums up: “Service is the rent you pay for the life you have on this earth. Give thanks, be thankful—and pay it forward.”
