Hello, friends!

It’s the DE Divah -aka- The Delaware Blogger here, and can I just say how grateful I am that you’re joining me on this journey through Boomers and Beyond? Life after 55 can truly be filled with adventure and joy – but let’s be honest, today’s economy is challenging us in new ways. Those tariffs, taxes, and the rising prices at the grocery store can make our budgets feel tighter than ever. But guess what? We don’t have to let these changes steal our joy or derail our plans. I believe with a bit of savvy and some smart strategies, we can keep living the good life without breaking the bank!

So go grab yourself a cup of coffee or tea and let’s get started on how I personally tackle these rising costs and give you some practical tips on saving while shopping.

My Go-To Grocery Savings:

First off, planning my meals is my number one game changer. It might sound basic, but knowing what’s for dinner helps me avoid those impulse buys and food waste. I always check my pantry and fridge before making a detailed shopping list and, most importantly, I stick to that list—even when those flashy sales try to tempt me!

I’ve also embraced store brands. Listen, I’m no stranger to the old-school generic packaging (white box with black letters, anyone?), and trust me, today’s generics are just as tasty as brand names, often for half the cost. Try them—your wallet will thank you!

And speaking of sales: don’t overlook those weekly flyers and digital coupons. I love scanning for discounts right in the store—sometimes those digital deals at Acme or other markets save me a chunk on every trip.

For those pantry staples, buying in bulk just makes sense. Whether it’s rice, pasta, or cleaning supplies, stock up when there’s a deal (and when you have storage space, of course!). I recently got a killer deal on chicken at Sam’s Club, split it up into freezer bags, and now I’m set for weeks.

Lastly, food waste gets no love here. I try to store my food properly, freeze leftovers, and get creative in the kitchen. Did you know you can use salsa when you’re out of diced tomatoes for chili? I found that out using AI recipe helpers, and it worked out deliciously. Technology can really stretch our ingredients further!

Bigger Purchases? Here’s My Approach:

When it comes to appliances or electronics, research is key. I never walk into a store and buy on impulse—I compare prices, scour reviews, and wait for those big sales. Believe me, those Memorial Day or Labor Day sales can make all the difference.

Don’t sleep on refurbished or open-box deals either! I’ve found great quality items at a fraction of the cost, and they often come with warranties. Plus, I always check for energy-efficient models; they cost a bit more upfront but save a ton on utility bills, which is huge with these rising rates.

And don’t be shy—negotiating can often score you a better price or at least a comparable alternative for less. I do this all the time, especially for furniture.

Buying used? If you inspect first, local classified ads, consignment shops, or apps like Nextdoor have been lifesavers for me. You never know what treasures you’ll find!

Saving on Services & Experiences:

Every so often, I review my subscriptions—streaming, gyms, even website hosting—and cut anything I’m not using. Those monthly fees add up so quickly!

For fun, I seek out free and low-cost community events: concerts, library programs, and senior activities. Sometimes I’ll even hit up a ribbon cutting for a new local business—it’s a free way to connect and enjoy something new.

And with gas prices climbing, carpooling with my Sorority sisters or friends has literally been a ride (and a money-saver)! If you haven’t already, do look into senior discounts. Those Tuesday deals at Walgreens or special days at Ross mean more money in your pocket for the things you love.

Don’t Forget Your Financial Health

This is the season to review your budget and keep an eye on your savings and retirement accounts. We don’t have decades left to recover from market ups and downs, so a regular check-in with a financial advisor is always a wise choice.
