On Episode #238 of the Delaware Blogger Podcast I shared several ideas and tips that may help you when it comes to choosing a topic for your show. In case you missed it, click the link above, however, if you prefer to read the show notes read the post below!
Go for the Goal
Make sure that you are clear on why you want to start a Podcast. What is the goal of your podcast, think about whether you need a Podcast for your brand or for your business.
It doesn’t matter if your field of interest or expertise is:
- health
- fitness
- family
- finances
- retirement
- education
- college tuition
- vocational training
- new business start up you need to know the pain points of your target market audience
Caring is Sharing
When choosing an idea for a podcast that you are genuinely interested in or truly care about you don’t need to be an expert in this field, but you do need to be passionate enough to spend time learning more about the topic.
Not only will you be excited to share your show, but your listeners will too!
Note: There are more than 1 million Podcasts, but over 650 million blogs. There may be less competition in podcasting, but you must consistently create high-quality content, otherwise you won’t get noticed.
Future Monetization for Your Podcast
With the rising popularity of podcasts there is an opportunity to make money online and earn a little extra income. If you are working hard on your podcasts, you should think about a monetization strategy in advance some which may include:
- Affiliate marketing
- Sponsorships and Advertisements
- Selling your own products
Whether or not you will be selling your own products or will be seeking out sponsors to buy ads on your show; you need to make sure that your topic is popular enough to garner interest and income!
What Problem Will Your Podcast Solve?
Think about your audience and know them well.
- Are they male or female?
- What do they do?
- Are they college students, working professionals, or senior citizens?
- Are they single moms, bloggers or entrepreneurs?
You should know the demographics of your podcast listeners. Knowing this will help you choose a topic that will address a specific pain-point solution for the listeners. Use your podcast to give answers to their questions or provide a solution for their problem.
Select a Niche and a Format for Your Podcast
It doesn’t matter if you are creating a podcast as a hobby or a business, it is suggested that you do not talk about too many different subjects. For example, don’t talk about weight loss in one episode and then politics in the next, you can mix it up, just don’t make it confusing to your listeners.
Try to have a theme or be specific with your niche so that your audience is likely to keep coming back for more. If you want to make podcasts to spread awareness, choose one theme instead of working on a bunch of random topics every week.
Along with a niche, you should also choose a format. A podcast is an audio media where you can experiment with several formats; it can be scripted with a single host or interview style with two individuals, or even a free-flowing conversation within a small group of people.
Include Keywords for SEO
Your podcast will rank higher in search engines if the topic includes keywords that people commonly use. There are many tools where you can find highly searched keywords on your subject and then use it in your topic. Try to have the main keyword for your podcast episode in the title or description.
Selecting a topic for a podcast is very important. A good idea for a podcast will be attractive for your audience and will also be interesting for you so that you will work on your show with passion and enthusiasm.
