Tuesday we had our first snowfall of the season which for me officially kicks off Soup & Sandwich Season.

Soup & Sandwich at Panera Bread

Hubby and I spent the morning finalizing our furniture order at Raymour and Flannigan then decided to head over to Panera Bread at the Christiana Mall for a late lunch.

Although we didn’t get an accumulation of snow it was FREEZING COLD so I ordered a half Chipotle Chicken Avocado sandwich with a bowl of Broccoli Cheddar Soup; hubby ordered a Mediterranan Grain Bowl and a bowl of Vegetable Soup, both of which were delicious.

This mid-day meal brings back memories because back in the day as soon as the winter weather arrived my grandmother would begin making her “good ole fashion Vegetable Soup. She would use all kinds of fresh vegetables including onions, carrots, string beans and celery, and of course a soup bone was added for flavor.

My grandmother would make more than enough so that she could put containers of it into the freezer to ensure that everytime it snowed we would soup for lunch.

My grandmother passed away at the age of 98 in 2009, but every winter season since then, I have tried to recreate her recipe.

Yesterday I had soup and a sandwich from Panera Bread, but next month after we’re settled into our “Forever Home” I will begin making a big batch of “good ole fashioned vegetable soup”.

Let’s chat > What is your favorite soup and sandwich combination?

  1. Oh, my word! I SO remember my Gramma’s house smelling of fresh-baked bread and homemade vegetable soup! Okay, I wasn’t expecting the tears…

  2. My husband made a wonderful veggie soup this past week- carrots, green beans, corn (zero points on the Weight Watchers plan I am on), a little bit of tomato sauce, and stock from free range chicken bones he had. But, some of my childhood memories are grilled cheese and tomato soup – of course it was canned tomato soup – but still. And, as non Weight Watchers as that combo is, I can still crave it.

    1. Oh my, yes, that is what I am talking about. Hubby is creating some wonderful soup memories that you have shared and hopefully they will last a lifetime for many who will read this blog post years from now.

      Enjoy!

  3. Well, you can see how illiterate I am in the kitchen because I don’t even know what a soup bone is! I always tell anyone who eats what I fix that it won’t make you want to reach out and slap nobody, but it’s edible, lol! Thankfully, I can season pretty good, so that helps. 🙂
My favorite soup and sandwich combo…I don’t know that it goes together, but I love french onion soup with the cheese melted over it and my favorite sandwich would likely be a turkey, bacon and ham club (hold the tomato).
