Back to Bowie, Maryland in a Mitsubishi

I can’t believe how quickly time flies, it seems as though it was just yesterday when we drove Malik and his belongings down to Bowie State University to start his senior year.  Now, here we are again, heading back down to pick it all up for the summer break…yes, he’s on that 4 ½ year plan so he has another semester to complete.

Thankfully, this time we didn’t have to rent a minivan and we were able to ride down in style thanks to my friends over at *Mitsubishi Motors.

Bowie State University is only 88 miles one way from the house and it’s straight highway, however, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge can be an uneasy experience especially in a smaller vehicle.  Driving the Mitsubishi made it a comfortable and pleasant ride as it was smooth and steady however, I did set off the lane departure alert a few times.

Malik was attending a campus event that ended later in the day, so hubby and I took our time and stopped at the Bowie Town Center for tea at Starbucks then picked up his aunt to take her to lunch at Panera Bread.  Aunt Alda, though the Mitsubishi was very comfortable and she looked quite happy sitting up front.

Aunt Alda loved the Panoramic Glass Sunroof which allowed the sun to shine down keeping her toasty warm.  I felt safe knowing it had a 7-Airbag Safety System, which covers the front, side curtains and the seventh airbag is underneath the driver’s side dashboard.

I didn’t get under the hood, however, click here to read the specs if you are interested in the engine.  I was more interested in the cargo space and as you can see, we were able to fit in all of Malik’s belongings and still have a little room in the back seat to take him out to eat before we left to return home.

The week that I had the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport I zipped up and down the state from Wilmington and down to Dover to teach my Building Your Blog Workshop and only had to stop for gas once which was great as the prices have been rising steadily leading up to the holiday weekend.

I loved listening to Watercolors on the Sirius XM Satellite Radio and the four Boise Speakers were bumping, oh, and the folding side mirrors was also a great feature which is perfect for city parking.  The Bluetooth Wireless technology and steering wheel controls make it easy to conduct conference calls as I headed to my virtual office at the Chamber of Commerce.

This particular model has an MSRP of $29,310.00 which is a bit pricey for us now especially with that extra semester of tuition, but the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport AWD would be perfect for a soon-to-be retired couple such as hubby and myself.

Let’s Chat > What do you think, would this be a good vehicle for you and your family?

Friday’s Fashion : Kicking it in Fall Booties From Target

With all the food that I and probably many of you consumed last week, I decided to forgo a Friday Foodie Feature and instead opted for a Friday Fashion OOTD.  I do, however, hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and were able to spend some quality time with your family and friends – unplug and unwind if for only 24 hours.

Malik drove home from Bowie on Wednesday afternoon and we had a great time, watching movies, shopping and of course he once again tried to break my bank but it wasn’t so bad this time.  This year he is a commuter staying at his great aunt’s house because he forgot to request housing last year so no dorm supplies are needed.  Tayair had to work each day except on Thanksgiving, so we were able to spend a wonderful day together which has become quite rare.

Blake Family 2017

We don’t shop on Black Friday so we spent the day inside relaxing and watching movies and of course, eating leftovers late into the night – I am afraid to get on the scale!  If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, then you may remember seeing these black Booties which I purchased from Target on clearance for $11.38.  I asked hubby to drive me down to the Marina in Middletown for a photo shoot and because the weather was nice, he obliged, otherwise, I would have been by that water by myself – hubby doesn’t like cold weather!

Marina in Middletown

We hadn’t been down to the Marina for several months and now there is a new restaurant which we need to check out, hopefully, it’s better than the previous establishment.  The last time we were there I did a photo shoot for MetroStyle – remember this post?

Kohl's Booties

It was very quiet on the water, however, there were a few brave souls dining outdoors at Grain H20 – I guess they just needed to get out of the house because, despite the fact it was nice enough to be out without a coat, it wasn’t nice enough to eat outdoors!

I fell in love with these black, suede booties because they are a perfect accessory to wear with either a dress or jeans or this oversized animal print tunic which has been a closet staple for over five-plus years.

Hubby is normally gracious when I ask him to accompany me for a photo shoot, but oftentimes, he looks at me like I am crazy and today wasn’t an exception, therefore, I had to take a few selfies for good measure!

I even stopped to do a Livestream video, which as you will notice hubby wasn’t enthusiastic at all!  Do you have trouble getting your hubby or significant other to take your pictures?

Dorm Decor for the College Bound Student

I can’t believe that in a few short weeks Malik will once again be leaving and heading back to start his last fall semester at Bowie State University.

Even though he worked almost all summer at Amazon, he spent most of his money, so once again will be looking to me to help him pay for any dorm decor items, it’s become a back to school shopping tradition!

back to college supply shopping

Lucky for me, I don’t have a son who’s really into fads and trends or even matching bedding, so it makes my job easier.  But if you are the parent of a college-bound student that is more particular, here are a few items that would be great for his/her dorm room from PBTeen.

Bohemian Tile Deluxe Comforter Set with Comforter, Sheet Set, Pillowcase, Mattress Pad, Pillow Inserts, and Blanket

Bring comfort to your home-away-from-home with this boho chic bedding set. Complete with every essential, this bundle will ensure a solid night’s sleep or power nap between classes.

Classic Robe

Sharing a communal bathroom? This classic plush robe is perfect for transitioning from shower to dorm, or just lounging in on Sunday morning. Get it monogrammed to make it your own.

Solid Canvas Bins

We all know dorms aren’t particularly large, so smart storage solutions are a must. You’ll stay organized and stylish with these solid canvas bins for under-bed, closet, and desk storage.

In addition to bedding, food and cleaning supplies which are high on the list, here are a few other College Campus Survival Kits from Amazon, that will make their home away from home a bit more manageable.

Think of it asMeals on Wheels for Students”

Items to help them keep their dorm room and clothes clean.

Snacks for those late night study sessions!

This mini refrigerator is available in multiple colors to match their bedding and it can be shipped directly to the school.  Plus it’s cheaper than renting and it will last for all of their college years and beyond!

Microwave oven to warm up snacks, cafeteria leftovers or for those weekend popcorn parties!

Let’s Chat:  Have you started your back to school shopping yet?

Family Dinner & the $200 Friday Night Fiasco

Ali Baba Middle Eastern Restaurant in Newark DE

Our family’s schedule has been so sporadic this summer with both Tayair and Malik working different shifts and me conducting workshops in the evening that we haven’t spent a lot of time together.

Tayair works part time at Home Depot in Middletown with a schedule that changes weekly and Malik works the overnight shift at Amazon, Sunday through Thursday.

However, it’s very important for us to spend some time together before Malik returns to Bowie State University next month.  We finally found a date that worked for all us so we headed into Newark, onto the campus of the University of Delaware to have dinner at Ali Baba which is our favorite Middle Eastern cuisine restaurant.

Ali Baba Restaurant and Hooka Bar

The atmosphere and wait staff are great and the food is amazingly good!  Malik and I ordered individual appetizers, he chose the Sambosa, which is a mixture of potatoes, peas, carrots, curry spice, stuffed in dough and is deep-fried.

I ordered the Stuffed Grape Leaves which are stuffed with rice, onion, tomato, parsley, and spices and I also ordered a glass of Sangria.

Hubby and Tayair both ordered the Samke Harra which is a flaky fresh salmon fillet, baked with tahini, garlic, cumin, onion, pine nuts, lemon juice, and parsley, served with a side of Middle Eastern rice.

Flaky Salmon

Unfortunately, hubby’s salmon wasn’t cooked thoroughly so he had to send it back to the kitchen and they placed it in a take home container.   Malik ordered the Shrimp Kabobs, which were grilled shrimp with vegetables, served on a bed of Middle Eastern rice.

I ordered the special, which was the spicy lamb dish and it was awesome.  I can’t remember the actual name of it but the waiter called it a “Happy Meal” and yes, it did make me happy!

Needless to say, we had a great family dinner and it would have been a perfect night except upon returning to the parking lot we saw a tow truck removing a car and then realized ours wasn’t there either!

Ewing Towing company in Newark

Yes, we had been towed too!  We had parked down the street in a very empty Burger King parking lot, far away from the entry.  However, I assume the racket that they are running is to call Ewing Towing every 20 minutes to remove cars that had been there longer, oh and by the way, there just happen to be Lyft driver sitting in the lot – can you say, SCAM!!!!

towing company scam

Our $100 dinner turned into $200.00 because the towing fee was $95.00 plus a $1.95 transaction fee for using a credit card…as if people walk around with an extra $100 cash in their pockets.  What really pissed me off was the fact that it’s summer and there are no classes in session on campus and there were only 4 cars parked at Burger King.

The Town of Newark will never have to worry about us spending our money there ever again because we will not be returning even if the food at Ali Baba is amazing!!!!  And to top it off, the leftover salmon that my hubby had packaged was forgotten and he left in the Lyft driver’s car!

We will miss you, Ali Baba!
