Hey there, Boomers and Beyond family! It’s the DE Divah, aka the Delaware Blogger and host of the Boomers and Beyond Podcast.
I’m thrilled to welcome you to another important conversation all about something near and dear to our hearts: our independence, our freedom, and yes—our ability to hit the open road behind the wheel.
Let’s Get Real About Driving as We Age
In this episode, “Aging Behind the Wheel,” I got candid about what it means to continue driving safely as we get older, and how to make smart, proactive choices to protect not just ourselves, but everyone sharing the road. Our cars are more than just vehicles; they’re ticket to freedom—chauffeuring us on errands, road trips, and memorable visits to family and friends. But let’s face it, aging brings changes, and some of those changes can sneak up on us behind the wheel.
Vision, hearing, slower reflexes, joint stiffness, medications—all these can impact our driving without us even realizing it. And trust me, I get it. As a type 2 diabetic, I know the importance of assessing my own well-being, and that goes for driving too. Whether it’s trouble seeing at night (the glare from headlights, y’all, it’s no joke!), needing a little more time to brake, or making sure that medication isn’t messing with our reflexes, it’s about honest self-assessment and prioritizing safety. Not just for us but for everyone we love.

How Do You Know When It’s Time?
This isn’t about giving up your independence—it’s about hanging onto it safely. I shared self-reflection questions you can ask yourself:
- Are you getting nervous or tired on even short drives?
- Have you had a couple of close calls lately?
- Has someone you trust suggested maybe it’s time to check your driving skills?
If you’re unsure, ride with a trusted friend, look into professional driving assessments, or check out refresher courses. I even recommend organizations like AARP, AAA, and local hospitals for extra support and resources.

Staying in the Driver’s Seat—Responsibly
Regular check-ups for your eyes and ears, talking with your pharmacist or doctor about medication side effects, and doing a few stretching exercises every morning—all can make a world of difference in prolonging your driving years. And don’t sleep on those modern tech marvels in new cars, like backup cameras and blind spot warnings!
But the most important advice? Don’t be afraid to strategize and adapt: stick to daylight driving, avoid bad weather, plan out your routes in advance, and say no to distractions. If you ever decide you’re ready to look at alternatives, remember—public transport, ride-sharing, and community programs are here for you.

Boomers and Beyond isn’t just a podcast, it’s a community. I want to hear from you:
- What have you done to stay safe and confident on the road?
- Have you found any resources or tips that worked wonders for you or someone you love?
Drop a comment, share your thoughts, because when you share your story, you give everyone else the gift of your experience!
