“If You Fail to Plan…You Plan to Fail!”
Preparation is key even before you press the record button and publish a podcast show. Saturday’s episode 220 on Anchor FM, I provided a few key pointers that will help to make your podcast a success, so make sure you check them out as you don’t want anything to negatively impact your audio.
- Position your microphone at least 2-3 inches from your mouth
- Check audio levels for proper sound quality
- Pad the place you will be recording from
- Put out any interrupters including pets and kids
- Pour a beverage
- Pee
- Practice Practice Practice
- Is your microphone positioned correctly?
Depending on the type of mic you are using, you typically want it to be 2-3 inches from your mouth and talking past it. If you don’t have a pop filter you can use a sock, just make sure your microphone is pointed slightly away from your mouth to avoid sound popping as much as possible.
- Check your audio levels if using recording software
If you are using recording software such as GarageBand or Audacity, take a few minutes to check your audio levels. You want to be between 5 and 7 decibels, or at the top of the green and yellow area but avoiding the red zone.
- Pad the place from which you are recording
The place or location from where you’ll be recording can make all the difference when it comes to audio quality. Make sure to choose a room that doesn’t have a heavy echo or allow in a lot of background noise. If that’s not not possible try these tricks to help minimize the noise.
- Use padding such as a mattress or a sofa in a room with carpet which can help soften sound and eliminate echoes or the sound.
- Close the curtains and windows or add pillows to absorb the sound.
- Turn off fan, air conditioner or heater if running
- Try sitting in a walk-in closet with clothes or under a “fort” made with two chairs and a comforter.
- Put out any interrupters
The last thing you want when you’re in the middle of recording is to be interrupted. Double check that you’ve turned off or muted your cell phone and desktop notifications, and don’t forget to ask guests to do the same.
If you have children or pets, make sure they have what they need and/or are occupied and won’t need anything from you during the time you’re recording.
Pour a Beverage and Pee
Make sure you have everything you need so don’t have to hit the pause button, keep your notes nearby; a glass of water or beverage and make sure you use the bathroom so that you won’t have to pause the show especially if you have a guest on the other line.
Practice Practice Practice
You should practice and run through this checklist as well as with any co-hosts or guests before pressing the record button to ensure your podcasting production quality is good every time.
Once you’ve covered your bases with your podcast prep, it’s time to hit record and start producing that great content.
