Honoring Legacies and Prioritizing Wellness: Spotlight on Breast Cancer Awareness & Community Initiatives in Delaware
Celebrating Resilience, Support, and Health Education with the Mu Psi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho

Community Connection: Out & About with Antoinette
On my podcast, “Out & About with Antionette” I continue the tradition of highlighting exceptional individuals shaping Delaware for the better. In a recent episode, I welcomed back Gemma Lowery for a heartfelt conversation that delved deeply into breast cancer awareness, women’s health, and the unwavering spirit of community service within the Mu Psi Sigma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated.

Honoring Soror Jenea Hall: Breast Cancer Awareness & the Sigma Sip and Share
This October, the Mu Psi Sigma alumni chapter pays tribute to a cherished sister, the late Jenea Hall, whose determination and vibrant zest for living touched everyone she met. We discussed how breast cancer impacts families and communities, and how it’s more crucial than ever to foster education, early detection, and emotional support.
To honor this legacy, the chapter is hosting a Sigma Sip and Share event on October 29th from 7–8pm at the Appoquinimink Library. This is a free gathering focused on sharing stories, learning, and supporting anyone touched by breast cancer. With after-dinner desserts, tea, and fellowship, attendees will hear from experts at the Helen Graham Center, a leader in the fight against breast cancer in Delaware. The event will also feature community partners such as AmeriHealth Caritas, who will offer vital resources and information.
Gemma shared, “This is a place where you can come and feel supported and talk to people who will understand what you’ve been through,” encapsulating the importance of safe spaces for processing and healing.

Education & Resources: Knowledge Is Power in the Fight Against Cancer
The episode underscored a rising concern: Middletown, Delaware is now a hotspot for breast cancer diagnoses, likely influenced by environmental factors and gaps in recent screenings due to the pandemic. We both highlighted that breast cancer does not discriminate by age, and genetic counseling can be essential—especially for those with a family history.
Helen Graham Center provides not only world-class treatment and education but also robust genetics support, making it possible for Delaware residents to keep their care local. Importantly, we reminded listeners that breast cancer isn’t exclusive to women; men, too, are affected and should consider genetic testing if there is a history of prostate or breast cancer in their family.
I drove the point home: “Women don’t wait. Check the tatas, you know, feel, touch, make sure you’re okay.” It’s a call for everyone—regardless of gender—to prioritize personal health and advocate for timely screenings.
The Power of Proactive Health: Why Early Detection and Self-Advocacy Matter
Beyond Breast Cancer: Supporting Women’s Wellness in All Stages
This month isn’t just about breast cancer awareness. Mu Psi Sigma also supported Pretty Moody’s Menopause 5K Walk at Glasgow Park on October 19th. This initiative helps break the silence around menopause and encourages women to embrace this life stage with pride and knowledge. Gemma emphasized the importance of talking openly about menopause and learning about treatments, lifestyle changes, and holistic wellness.
The chapter’s packed calendar showcases their dedication to engaging, educating, and empowering the community through events open to all.
Lessons in Perseverance: More Than a Diagnosis
One of the episode’s most inspirational messages came from reflecting upon Jenea Hall’s journey. Gemma reminded listeners, “It’s a diagnosis, not a definition. You are so much more than your diagnosis.” Jenea’s life was an example of refusing to let illness limit joy or restrict ambitions—a message for everyone facing difficulties.
