The Art of UnRetirement: Finding Purpose, Passion, and a Fresh Start After 55
Hello my fellow boomers and beyond!
It’s your host, Antionette Blake here—better known as the DE Divah, aka the Delaware Blogger—with some inspiration straight from the latest episode of the Boomers and Beyond Podcast. If you missed it, now’s the perfect time to catch up, because we explored a hot topic that’s reshaping what it means to thrive after 55: the art of unretirement.
Gone are the days where retirement meant slowing down for good. These days, so many of us are discovering that the next chapter isn’t about doing less—it’s about doing what matters most. Whether it’s a search for renewed purpose, a little extra income, or simply staying engaged, unretirement is all about forging your own path, at your own pace.

What Is “UnRetirement,” Anyway? Unretirement isn’t just about going back to your old job. It’s about exploring passions old and new, using your skills in fresh ways, and finding flexible opportunities that fill your days with purpose and connection.
Take my friend from church, for example: after decades as a police officer, he retired and was ready to relax. But it didn’t take long before he felt the urge to stay active and involved—so he found a less stressful, people-facing role as a security guard at the DMV. He’s still serving his community, still connecting with people, but on his terms. How inspiring is that?
And if you know my story, you’ll remember: I was forced into retirement at 55 when my corporate career ended. But my love for connecting with others and sharing tips led me to start my own business and this very blog! The “forced pause” turned out to be the perfect chance to pour my heart into something I truly love.

Ready to UnRetire? Here’s How to Start… Thinking about what comes next? I encourage you to:
- Self-Reflect: What skills and experiences do you have that are valuable? What do you enjoy? You might be surprised at how your hobbies or volunteer work could become your next adventure!
- Get Creative: Explore part-time roles, consulting, turning crafts or homemade foods into a small business, or even working remotely. There’s truly something for everyone.
- Stay Open-Minded: The key is flexibility and willingness to learn. Your perfect unretirement role might surprise you.
Share the Journey with Us! Are you considering unretirement? Have you already taken that leap? I’d LOVE to hear your story—and I know our community will, too! Drop a comment below or send me a message. Let’s lift each other up and show the world what Boomers and Beyond can do.
