Hey there, DelBlogger family!
It’s Antionette Blake here—your friendly host of the Boomers and Beyond Podcast, and the voice behind this very blog. Today, let’s talk heart-to-heart about something many of us experience but few openly discuss: loneliness.
On the latest episode, “The Silent Epidemic,” I got real about those moments after retirement, when the busyness of raising kids and conquering careers fades, and the house suddenly feels a little too quiet. Have you ever gone half a week without speaking to another soul? If that resonates, you’re not alone—far from it!

Did you know our Surgeon General has called loneliness a serious public health crisis? Research shows social isolation can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. I know how tough quitting smoking is (been there, done that, back in 2009!), so this comparison truly hit home for me.
But here’s the empowering truth: being alone doesn’t always mean feeling lonely. There’s a world of difference between the pain of loneliness and the glory of solitude. Solitude is intentional, restorative, a time to feed your soul—maybe with a good book, some gardening, or quiet reflection.
So, how do we move from pain to glory? Enter the concept of the “third place”—not home, not work, but community. Whether it’s your neighborhood coffee shop, a library, a church pew, or even my favorite, Focus Pharmacy right here in Smyrna, it’s vital to have a space where you feel seen. Even quick chats with your local barista or mail carrier can boost your mood and remind you that you belong.
Technology can help, too. Don’t be afraid to join those Facebook groups for gardeners, walkers, cooks, or crafters. Better yet, use them as a stepping stone to real-life connection!

My Challenge to You:
This week, strike up a conversation with a stranger—yes, really! Whether you’re in the grocery line or walking through the park, say hello, chat about the weather, or even giggle over the rising cost of eggs. Let’s keep each other happy, healthy, and connected.
