It is no secret that our utility bills in the First State have been anything but “small wonder” lately. With Delmarva Power’s recent requests for base rate increases and the double-digit spikes many of us saw in our gas and electric costs throughout 2025 and into 2026, keeping the house warm has become a major line item in our budgets. For those of us in the 55+ community—whether you are fully retired or still managing a side-hustle like me—every dollar counts.
The good news? You don’t have to choose between shivering and overspending. Here are several practical, high-impact ways to keep your home cozy while keeping those energy bills in check.

1. Stop the “Invisible” Drafts
Did you know that air leaks can account for nearly 25% of your home’s heat loss? In older homes, especially around Smyrna and Dover, windows and doors are the main culprits.
-
The Draft Test: On a windy day, hold a lit candle or a stick of incense near your window frames and door sweeps. If the flame flickers, you’re losing money.
-
The Fix: Use decorative door draft stoppers for a quick, stylish fix. For a more permanent solution, a window insulation film kit can create an airtight seal that is virtually invisible.

2. Work Your Windows
In Delaware, we still get plenty of sunny winter days. Use them to your advantage!
-
Daytime: Open your south-facing curtains to let the sun naturally heat your living room.
-
Nighttime: Close them as soon as the sun sets. Better yet, invest in thermal blackout curtains. They act as an extra layer of insulation, trapping the heat you’ve already paid for inside the room.

3. The “Clockwise” Fan Trick
Most of us have ceiling fans to keep us cool in the summer, but they are year-round tools. On the base of your fan, there is a small toggle switch. Flip it so the blades spin clockwise at a low speed. This creates an updraft that pushes the warm air (which naturally rises to the ceiling) back down into your living space.
4. Smart Heating for Smart Boomers
If you are still using a manual thermostat, you might be heating an empty house or a room you aren’t using.
-
The Math: By lowering your thermostat by just 7–10 degrees for eight hours a day (like when you’re sleeping), you can save up to $10 on your annual heating costs.
-
The Upgrade: A Smart Thermostat allows you to control the temperature from your phone. No more getting out of your warm bed to adjust the heat!

5. Cozy Up with Layers
Sometimes the best way to save on energy is to heat the person, not the room.
-
Stay Toasty: Grab a Sherpa-lined weighted blanket for movie nights. Not only are they incredibly warm, but the weight can also help with relaxation and better sleep.
-
Fashion First: Don’t forget high-quality merino wool socks. Keeping your feet warm is the fastest way to regulate your entire body temperature.

Local Delaware Resources
If you are worried about meeting your energy costs this season, don’t forget that Delaware offers several assistance programs:
-
Energize Delaware: They offer home energy audits for as little as $50 to help you find exactly where your home is losing air.
-
DEAP (Delaware Energy Assistance Program): This is a federally funded program (LIHEAP) that helps eligible households with their heating bills. You can apply through Catholic Charities or First State Community Action Agency.

Staying warm doesn’t have to break the bank. With a few small adjustments and some “DelBlogger” ingenuity, we can keep our homes—and our wallets—comfortable all winter long.
